Pedals-overdrive into distortion? Or vise versa?

I've always ran lower gain overdrive pedals into my higher gain distortion pedals. Seemed like the logical thing to do since you typically use an od pedal as a boost before your amp's high gain channel.

I read recently that Pete Cornish suggests doing the opposite. He states that the distortion pedals provide sustain and the od pedals shape the tone. I have been trying both ways all day and can't decide, so I compromised and did both!

MXR classic OD --->Lovepedal Eternity--->Big Muff (set with higher gain)---> BB+ with one side setup with low gain and one with high---->OCD with gain set at noon and then finally into two delay pedals set with different repeat times.  It's a whole lot of different gain tones, but it gives me tons of versatility. How are you guys running your dirt boxes?

I like running the OD first in the chain if I use both types of pedals...

I actually run both. My signal chain can be a bit odd but it gives me lots of textures

Fuzz face - Wah - OD1 - distortion - OD2 - Muff - Muff - OD3

I actually have 3 or four muff variants in there in different places, bu the above is the overall vibe.

i don't drive the fuzzface with anything because it hates being anywhere other than right before the wah

OD1 is a tubescreamer set to a cleanish boost which i use to drive basically anything else on the board or get an SRV thing from the amps clean channel

OD2 is a KOT which i use for volume boosting the distortion because those 2 particular pedals get along very well, or on its own for a great crunchy classic rock thing

OD3 is a Tube Driver whichis used to smooth out the muffs ala gilmour

most of the above ae used on a clean channel set to just a touch of breakup and from time to time i use them to push the lead channel further

...or you can run an OD and a distorsion in parallel.
I just got a TC nova drive and the parallel mode is really useful!

In this clip you can hear the different routings of the nova drive.
OD into distorsion 5:55-6:10
Distorsion into OD 6:10-6:20
OD parallel with distorsion 6:53-7:03

Cool pedal and video, thanks. My BB+ allows me to route od into dist and vise versa. I like both options for different reasons.
BTW, is that Nova pedal analog like the od from the Nova System? Sorry if you already said it in the video, I skipped to the playing.

The video wasn't me... But it's an analog pedal with digital control, you can save presets and change presets with MIDI. Really useful pedal!
