For me its the Herbie Channel 3 ... There's a bunch of others I like but so far for high gain rhythm that one is a beast. Thick , juicy and tight. What do you guys like the most for high gain stuff ?

I just stick with Recto1 (I like the Orange Modern) with the 808 or one of the 5150s. Mainly because these are the amps I actually know well, so I'm just more comfortable/confident working with the sims.

The Uber is really true to form, as is the Ecstacy Red (I use it with 6CA7s too).

I’m disappointed with the CCV amp model. They left out one gain pot. Which has a 3 way cap switch too. That extra pot adds so much tweak ability… makes me wonder WTF they were thinking? I mean, you can get so nitty gritty with deep dives into parameters, but to leave off an actually gain knob ??‍♂️

Hmm , sorry to hear about that knob Dave. I haven't spent much time with the CCV yet. The Atomica I like so far. Something about the Herbert Im really digging. Im just surprised by this unit overall, Going direct It sounds better than my favorite plugins, it also sounds better than a couple real amps I tried with the two notes torpedo/ reactive load.

I have not tried the FM3 with a poweramp and cab yet. I have a KSR PA50 on the way so that is my next adventure. Im gonna try it thorough that with a cab in the room and compare it to my tube amps. Either way my FM3 is staying because for going direct it sounds better than anything else I have.

The Axe’s Mesa models are really good. Can’t go wrong with the Rectos and Marks in there. I’m also a fan of the EVH 5150 III 50w Blue model. Sounds great. JCM 800 model with a boost will cut through anything, too.

The FAS amp models are really something as well. FAS Modern II and FAS Modern III are excellent. The FAS Modern I model is Fractal’s ideal design for a modern high gain amp. The Modern II is that plus extra depth, similar to a Peavey 5150’s poweramp. And the Modern III is Fractal’s take on an idealized Recto.

thats weird, I swear it used to have two. Especially strange since there are multiple models that do have two gain controls, like the jumped Marshall’s and mesa marks.

I quite liked that model years back before they changed it, back when it was only one model for channel 1 and one model for channel 2.

Same here, when I'm doing gainy stuff. The odd time I want a different flavor, but I mostly use that channel. I downloaded the Devin Townsend preset off that GR66 website (or something like that) and love it... it has 'heavy rhythm' and 'lead' on the seven scenes, which I modified slightly to match the pickups on my Majesty. Obviously, I go to a Trainwrecker, Fender, etc., if I'm doing something more low-key, but nothing in particular for that stuff.

what are the general amp settings for devin rhythm channel? ( as if you wanted to recreate it on a real recto), is it orange channel?

Not sure I can pick just 1. I've got three main presets I use all with two amp blocks and 4 channels on each block one amp panned right the other on the left. Generally speaking, channel A are super clean fenders, although different models, on both blocks. Channel B move to a bassman and a plexiish clean. Channel C brings in a super lead or dirty Shirley and a vh4 blueface. Channel D brings in an slo, bogner fish, or friedman BE along with a friedman hbe v3.

They all sound good on their own but these 2 amp combos really sound great to my ears.

Big fan of the SLO here. I run the gain around noon and use the boost in the preamp section - usually the Shimmer or SD1 boosted @ 10dB. Sounds awesome.
I started using the boosts in the preamp section over a boost block. Learned that little tidbit from Leon Todd.

I like several of them: the 2018 Friedman c45 and HBE C45, JP-2C, JVM410HJS and the Bogner 20th Blue and Red.

Cool... you get to select what boost/drive you want in the amp's boost section? I presume so... I'll have to look into that. So far, I really prefer doing drive/boosts in front of the FM3... I'm talking about an actual pedal. I'm either using the Hagerman VALVE or the Night Owl Parabellum (both are tube drive and it seems to produce more realistic amp tones to the FM3).

Yes, you can select from a smaller list of drives in the preamp section.

Yeah the internal boosts in the amp block is a cool feature. Saves some CPU too.

Love the 50w Plexi and Atomica models, both are mean and tight yet have some chew, killer for both rhythm or lead playing.
