With the 80's rockers being 60's/70's/80's yrs old where is music going ?

Music is always going. Just no more statefair and casino reunion shows with one or two original members pounding supplements backstage. Now just younger European bands nailing the nostalgia trip with their take on it.

I thought about this yesterday actually. Newer bands like Baroness and Mastodon have my attention from time to time but the vast majority of "rock" that has been coming out for years does not interest me at all. I can't do the shreddy math rock either. Getting old I guess.

I do like some of the stuff that Dino J has been putting out and would like some suggestions on similar bands. Riffy and crunchy guitars without cookie monster vocals.

Thing is with math rock is there's a shitload of bad bands IMO that write their songs using a calculator.
Plini stands out to me cause the compositions are actually really, really good.

His melodies are very keyboard like. He reminds me more of Wakeman and Emerson than Vai and Satriani at times.

Yup. Megadeth is basically Dave and the Deth-Rays now, much like Billy C and his Smashing Pumpkins: only the leader remains.

God bless them, but I like BANDS. Not vanity projects.

Edit: and fuck David Coverdale for kicking Sykes out of WS in the day. That no one ever got to see him shred that live is absolute musical blasphemy and shall live in infamy forever. The bass player and drummer got the shaft too. Ugh!

Seriously those rockers are still at it. Iron Maiden's new album is savage. Black Sabbath did The End tour not so long ago.

My thoughts on the matter are that they will replace each member one by one as they get too old to play and the bands will still continue that way.

So where has it gone? Alternative metal, nu-metal has sort of blended with it.

Stuff like that. I like Mastodon, Red Fang, Tool, and Foo Fighters lots.

The most notable thing is tuning away from E Standard and a half step down towards lower tunings like D and C Standard. Drop D is still around. D Drop C. B standard. That is the big change IMO. Although even Black Sabbath were doing C# Standard for stuff.

maybe you need some new smashing pumpkins 90s sounding bands to help deal with the sykes disaster. heres a few from the many on my spotify summer 21 playlist. this new Nothing album is as good as anything from the 90s





 
Rock will survive in the form of tribute and cover bands. There is an ever growing number of them north of the border, anyway.

Musicianship is still alive and well in the underground metal scenes, but it seems that the vocals will steer a lot of otherwise would-be fans away.

The music industry is as corporate and money grubbing as ever and they've really nailed down the build-a-band program. There are a handful of great genuine musicians who still taking risks and trying to make unique sounds but the industry wants to back money makers, not risk takers.

Will check these out. Teenage Wrist up to Counting Flies EP/Kam leaving is great 90’s rock. Marshall and Tony are keeping the name going forward but Lam’s new Heavenward is og TW.

I think the production of it is also tiring our ears. We keep circling back to it but snapping to grid, excessive perfection, auto tune, style of singing and vibe of the tune. It all adds up because it is all creating fatigue due to it sounding the same. 5 metal bands back to back will sound like they were produced during the same session.

Funny you say this. Was thinking the other day back to around 1980.
My stepmom's teen music was during the 50s - 30 years earlier by then.

We had maybe 6 popular clubs that featured rock bands all the time.
Once or twice a month one would have a 'special' 50s night where they'd
book a period correct looking DJ who'd spin 45s of all the big hits.


The golden oldies in 2020 would be the 80s and 90s - yet it's still not a
novelty to play those songs all night in a club, and it's common to see
folks from 3 distinct generations in the audience singing along.

TL;DR

Our music was the best of all time!
