Those who wanted to preserve slavery became known as Democrats, those who stood for abolition became know as Republicans. btw... Democrat Rep. Preston Brooks' brutal attack on Republican Senator Charles Sumner (on the floor of the Senate) was the catalyzing event that led to the Civil War. The battle over slavery was not a North vs South issue... It was a Republican vs Democrat issue. Democrats in the North were pro-slavery, same as the Democrats in the South.
