First mix in awhile! All analog (mostly), Real amps, real tones!

Just putting up a rough first mix I’ve been working on today. I wasn’t able to listen on my usual reference ( the truck of course!), but I think it’s ok so far. Lots of real amps on this one, all processing done with real analog eq.

Main rhythms:

Rev F dual rec ( Orange modern)
Peppers dirty tree
Unidyne SM57
Mesa OS
BAE 1073 preamp
Apogee converters

EQ’d with my new sontec 250 clone. Filters were SSL E channel, that’s IT.


Cleans:

Diezel Herbert:

Same signal chain ( minus the dirty tree)


Leads:

Peavey 6534
Same signal chain
Soundtoys for the stretching

Atmospheric was also the 6534


Bass:

MIDI bass unfortunately but hey oh well!
IGS GML Clone for eq
IGS SSL g Comp (!) for compression
Mammoth plugin for overdrive


Drums:

Superior

Sounds great mate, really liking those tones and the mix has a lot of space for everything sit in it's space. ?

Too many guys get excited and overdub the shit out of it with a million different guitar leads and too much going on.
You kept it nice a clean!

Any tips for how you setup the recto with the dirty tree?
Particularly around the recto eq with this type of setup.

Would be keen to try this with my rackmount

Bro I’m the last guy you wanna talk to about this. I go against ALL the internet folklore when it comes to tones and ideology…except when it comes to mics. 57 only all the way :D haha!

Anyways… all I can say is don’t be afraid to let your ears dictate what sounds good. Seriously. Sometimes I feel you need a great reference to understand what is actually “good”, and that’s hard sometimes. By that I mean, well what is actually a great tone and what does it sound like by itself? YouTube is ok for this sometimes, lots of ISO’d drums bass and guitar tracks out there from big records, and that’s a good start. But don’t be afraid to go against the grain. Why am I saying that?….





I did this clip with the rectos bass knob on 10, or almost 10…. Everyone just had a stroke. I know. But guess what? It rules. And the biggest names In the biz don’t follow rules. So neither should you or me! If it sounds good to you, it IS good, period. Best advice I’ve ever been given. but at the same time, I have a fantastic monitoring platform at my place, much much better than most, THIS makes a difference. I hear things on my monitors that I didn’t before in my old room. And part of that is learning to trust what you are hearing. This is really hard for me personally because most rooms and studios in general, are not something you should trust!


Anyways. Im rambling. Like I always do. Here’s a sure win. Put the dirty tree in TC mode. Put the bass at zero, treble at noon, level at noon, and start there. Again, don’t be afraid to go against the grain. Does it sound sick with the mids at zero? Sick. Use it. Mids on 10? Killer. Who cares. Whatever gets you where you wanna be. I eq’d this track on the master buss unlike anything I would EVER do in the plugin world. I boosted the Christ out of 7-800 hz. Who cares? It sounded awesome :)


The dirty tree is gonna rule with the recto no matter what you do….. I hate rules as you see, but really, TC mode sounds the best by far to me, and I literally never use anything else. Have fun!

Love your approach mate.

I'm similar, I play in a weird tuning that nobody has heard off and tend to have heaps of highs since my guitar is so heavy, dark and sitting around drop B area.

I'll have a play.

Oh yeah i'm a 57 all the way guy too.. it works so bugger trying other stuff haha

The Dirty Tree is an amazing pedal. Became my favorite boost almost immediately after plugging it in. The Fortin Blade is my other keeper at this point.

It’s pretty fantastic. I’ve had mine for about 2 years now and I can’t get enough of it!
 
Wanted to add one more, I forgot to do something I meant to do on the mastering chain.

Ran the master through my BAE 1073s, into my hardware IGS g Comp style buss comp ( AMAZING) into the sontec eq. This will sound different than the first because of course, it’s impossible to do perfect recall with this hardware eq. Not sure the differences will come through perfectly but WOW the IGS Has SPANK compared to any plugin I’ve ever heard. Adds a ton of weight. The BAE’s just add some… I dunno… girth? Weight and tone? It’s hard to Describe, and it depends on how I hard you drive the preamps. Overral I like where this is going though! Enjoy!

Thanks man, I appreciate it! Ozone was the only thing on this that was digital on the master buss. On this all I used was the limiter, and some slight stereo widening using the spectral image module I think. Basically just to widen out the super high end and give it more air. So the chain would’ve been hardware G Comp Compressor, my sontec stereo EQ, then ozone. That’s it!
 
Dig it! My IGS S- comp just came in today! Interested in your other eq's though. Prefer them to the pultec type EQ?

That's the thing, when you approach it with hardware, less moves. Surprised you didn't use your hardware for mastering EQ though. Did they not measure up?

No no, I did use the sontec EQ! i was just replying to his question about plugins. The sontec eq was on this as well. It’s just amazing. You can boost anything and it just sounds great, blows me away. Like I legit boosted 7-800hz or something on this entire track like 5-6 db. I would NEVER do that with a plugin. But it just sounds phenomenal no matter what I do, it rules! The S Type is great, you’re gonna love it.


I have the rubber bands mastering grade stereo pultec clone they make and it is indeed fabulous. It is insane on bass. The pultec with an 1176 is magical on bass no doubt about it. I like pultecs on guitars too but I have found I’m not a huge color eq fan, which the pultec is extremely colored. It rules regardless, and it is amazing with my Herbert I’ve found I will say. But on the mix buss, and a slight push at 60db…. WTxh out. HEAVY! there’s a reason why people love them for sure!
 
Where can I find this sontec eq? Is it the kit in 500 series that is for sale or did you buy one of these 8k rack units?

Right now I can't decide what direction I want to take with eq. I've been using the noise ash rule tec and I like what it does on kick and snare. I'm thinking of trying a set of 500 series clones from bucciclassicos in Argentina. He also has a stereo rack unit for under 800 U.S. But then I am also thinking , I can use the plugin for that, why not try a tonelux parametric eqp5 or a trident 80b eq. The eq on my console is basic but it sounds pretty good to my ears. I've experimented with setting it where I want and then using plugin surgical eq into it to further nudge it where I want. But as you mentioned, bass running through a pultec circuit just sounds right.

So much good stuff out there now, we are lucky. I think I mentioned them before but you need to check out access analog. I'm thinking any mastering or need for limiter, you can find there without dropping 1000's. Listen in real time and tweak hardware like it is a plugin. It's crazy. Lots of compressors too.
