Is this the end of the tube amp?

What about JJ?

JJ's still alive and active, with minor troubles due to pandemic.

I personally think, unless some other major events occur, this won't be the END of tubes and valve-based technology, but will bring lasting consequences, the most relevant being a price increase that will possibly put a relevant stop at guitar players' Swapping Tubes For Fun game.

I wouldn't be surprised if they end up making affordable digital/SS tubes. Similar to a SS rectifier plug in but for pre and power tubes. Then you can buy the cheap SS/digital tube or pay up for the real thing.

There will always be tube amps until an amplifier company comes out with a product that can level the playing field for modelers. Why the fuck is it so hard to find a flat response 4x12 cab? Fuck all these little cabs and personal monitors. A guitar rig is every bit as important of the drum set next to it. Give me the wall of sound with a modeler, and I'll consider it. Until then, I'll use real amplifiers to amplify.

Tubes aint going anywhere until the EU Commission reaches their final form. Then we're fucked. But that is at least 3 months away, we still gots time!!
What do you mean by the EU Commission's final form?

I guess sort of "it's forbidden everything that casts a shadow". I mean, recently EU tried to to forbid to use of some varieties of Italian wine cause "they may cause cancer". An no, it wasn't some sort of plutonium infused wine, just Prosecco.

Eventually, Dave Friedman will develop a higher end SS amp. I know a lot of people are going the modeling route. I actually have been considering this as well. I love standing in front of a 100 watt tube amp roaring on the stage. But this is getting more and more impractical for club use. The older I get the less shit I want to carry to a show. A lot of big touring bands have moved to modelers for touring to save costs. Metallica, Shinedown, Architects, etc... Most audiences can't tell the difference. They just want to see the show.

We can argue about "new" designs, but then we are all chasing a cranked plexi sound anyway...lol!

311 hasn't. miT (Tim Mahoney) is still rocking an Uberschall and Mesa head through two 4x12's, and Nick's got two Mesa Road King 4x12's on stage. Traveling light is cool and all, but tube amps are the genuine article.

That said my own father went from a Dual Rec to a Guytron to an Orange Rocker 30 to a Rockerverb Mk III (for loop) and just when he was 100% satisfied with his tone, he bought a Helix!

I love my tube amps. To each their own!

Oh don't get me wrong, I love tube amps. I also see the usefulness of modeling. When we play shows, I have the only amp on stage. Now that we have gone to an IEM system, it's getting harder to justify hauling a half stack to clubs.

IEM is great for protection and perfect mix and amps onstage give the visceral feel/thunder. Best of both worlds!

never understood the binary response to the tube vs. modeler argument. Two completely different tools, but can be very complimentary of the other. I have both, will keep both, and will continue to love both.
I agree here, it’s not a binary choice. Sort of like 10,000 flavors of JCM800’s, it’s just another tool, another flavor to make music. I never cared if it sounded exactly the same, actually glad to get different sounds.

Its more likely that zero stage volume operations allow those large acts to run smoother and sound more consistent night to night when the stakes are super high. If you don't have mics on cabs that's one less thing to go wrong. I don't think Metallica really cares about the cost of moving a few more road cases. Those dudes play what they want to play.

Fan-fucking-tastic. I was just looking at tubes yesterday and prices were normal. Rhett puts out a video, and 24 hours later prices doubled or stores have sold out. Fuck Rhett and this panic pushing bullshit.

No.

Without new tube amp designs, what will you have to profile?

If everyone switches to profilers, we'll be stuck with the same tones we have now, forever.
Dan Dan Dan there has been no new amp designs for decades just a better mousetrap

I disagree ? there's all sorts of cool newer stuff - and I don't even LIKE the newer high gain amps for the most part (revv, etc)
