Hey guys! So, I have a Mesa Quad Preamp with a Mesa 50/50 power amp. Now I need to choose a cab. I really love Metallica’s Justice and Black Album tone and as far as I know, they used Marshall cabs with G12 Vintage speakers.
The cabs that I am thinking about are:
-Marshall Silver Jubilee 2536
-Marshall Silver Jubilee 2536A
-Marshall 1960BV
-Mesa Boogie 2x12 Vertical Recto

I’m a bit afraid that the 4x12 Marshall would be too loud in my bedroom. Unfortunately I couldn’t test these cabs yet in person.
What do you guys think?

Pretty sure you’ve already exceeded bedroom levels with the 50/50. Hahahaa
Go for the Marshall 1960, or find a Mesa Traditional. Not what Metallica used, but it’ll kill with your rig.

I personally think 2 extra speakers wont make much of a volume difference at bedroom levels. To me 4x12 always sounds better but you dont really need all that for the house.

Cab construction does make a difference but I feel that the speakers inside make more of a difference.

If it were me I would go for a 2x12 for convenience if it is just for the home. Those 1960 cabs are super light however.

Or if you're on a budget just get the cheapest one you can find. I just bought the Harley Benton 2x12 loaded with V30s for $312 shipped brand new and it sounds killer.

I hope not, the 50/50 has a 15w mode, so that could be manageable. I don’t play at super quiet bedroom levels either.

I would go with the Marshall 1960BV, especially if you can find one used for a good price. I have a one and use mine with my Mark IIIs and it sounds killer, even at lower volumes.
What’s your experience, are 4x12 louder than 2x12? Cause I’ve heard a lot of debate around this

Marshall BV is almost $2000 new but it’s definitely the best cab available for that . I just posted this pic about it being perfect for mesas like two days ago . It does the trick for the black album tone

412 will always out-volume a 212, if the speakers are the same. Some 212s will project almost as much as a 412(Mesa halfback for example) but still fall short.

Try to find deals on craigslist or marketplace on used cabs. You can find awesome cabs for 1/3 the price as new. If they have a couple scratches on them, who cares baby that's rock n roll and if you ever take them out its gonna happen anyway.

The most forgotten, yet one of the most important aspect of metallicas tone from the black album era, is the Marshall BV cab. People chase that tone for years, getting down to extreme accuracy of the gear used on that record to get that tone, but then botch the factor that effected a huge part of that tone: the cab. So kudos to everyone that brought that up.

If you ever mic a Marshall BV cab with an era correct MD 421 and Unidyne sm57, you’ll see how important those aspects are for that sound. This is by no means perfect, but for 5 minutes of tweaking, this is pretty good in my opinion. Would’ve never gotten anywhere close to that sound without the BV cab and 421-U and Unidyne /sm57.

Coffee Cabs is apparently building some sweet cabs in the Czech Republic. Get something sweet and never need another cab again.

Coffee Audio

Out of that list, take the Marshall 4x12. If you can find a Mesa Traditional 4x12, pick that up instead.

I couldn’t stand kohles video on YouTube of the coffee cab vs the Mesa cab both with the same speakers… the amount of eq you would need to do to make that sit right when using the coffee cab would be exhausting. It has so much extra shit going on in the tone which sounds great on its own, but is a mess in a mix. Was not a fan at all.
