Which Cabinet To Choose?

The most forgotten, yet one of the most important aspect of metallicas tone from the black album era, is the Marshall BV cab. People chase that tone for years, getting down to extreme accuracy of the gear used on that record to get that tone, but then botch the factor that effected a huge part of that tone: the cab. So kudos to everyone that brought that up.

If you ever mic a Marshall BV cab with an era correct MD 421 and Unidyne sm57, you’ll see how important those aspects are for that sound. This is by no means perfect, but for 5 minutes of tweaking, this is pretty good in my opinion. Would’ve never gotten anywhere close to that sound without the BV cab and 421-U and Unidyne /sm57.

I really dig your tone man. That sounds HUGE. Now I’m really leaning towards the Marshall 1960BV

Thanks man, I appreciate it. That vibe just isn’t the same with any other cabinet. Case in point: I used a recto and a peppers dirty tree: not even close to the same mark series amps used on the black album, and yet I still caught the vibe. It’s the cab man, it’s a huge part of that sound no doubt. I think you’ll love it. I love all my cabs, I have 8 I think. But my BV’s are my favorite. The recto cabs are phenomenal too, but they are very different sounding. The BV cabs also have more thump and low end than the recto cabs believe it or not; you always here how sturdy and solid recto cabs are and it’s very true however, that tightness in the joints and the build in general constricts low end “bloom” compared to the looser Marshall cabs. I have both as I enjoy both immensely, but it’s all in what you are going for!

Dont take it the wrong way or be offended and this shows how bad I would be at mixing. That tone sounds like shit. It is so shrill and hurts my ears. But I'll be damned if that doesn't sound exactly like the Black Album tone. I bet in a mix it would be near identical and sound amazing.

No offense taken… but that is how the black album isolated tones are, and many modern metal tones period really. But yes, I very much think I’m a mix it would be stellar. The world of mixing and playing live are two different worlds for sure, so I think it’s always important to give context with things like this, and my opinions come very much from recording for sure. I’d be curious what you are listening on or what tones you are into though.

But yes the black album is the antithesis of modern production: guitars have tons of 4K, there’s very little compression on the entire mix, the drums are way loud and upfront etc. but it sounds great, and isn’t safe.

Out of all the amps I've had or played. Some have been pretty high dollar...The VHT Pitbull and Monomyth origin have been my favorites. After selling everything I ended up going back to a Pitbull.

As far as listening to clips it's either on a sennheiser one headset or a Galaxy s8+ cell phone ?

If it was something i was seriously looking into I would use my car as well along with whatever else I could play it through. But for fucking around on the internet it's either my phone or my headset.

It's the Dirty Tree.. lol
Guess it could be a good studio tool.

I'm super old school man and I cant record/mix for shit. The tones I seek have always been for either for live shows, band practice or bedroom practice.

I'm not in an active band where I would be concerned with getting "my tone" translated to a recording, I would use a DI, pay a mixer and say have fun.

I meant to post this earlier… for you haters haha!

Metalcore, not super downtuned at all… no harshness…

WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DOING WRONG!?

I finally sold the pos but before I shipped it, I tried it with my Spec Op and it sounded fantastic. Oddly enough the 33 clone I have sounds great with it as well. That being said, the Spec Op IMO is seriously underrated. It will hold it's own with anything out there.

I watched so many videos of the DT and Recto's. Louis Torres explained it best. Basically, make your recto sound like a flubby mess of shit and then the DT will shine. That makes no sense to me. I just couldn't get along with them together.

I think that’s a half way decent point Louis makes. For instance you can run the bass incredibly high on the recto and still have it retain punch, clarity, and extreme tightness with the dirty tree in the chain, that’s what’s beautiful about it I think. But again, it’s not for everyone for sure of course!

I know exactly what youre saying. It was the same exact thing with the 33. Jason made it sound incredible, I got one right away but then I was like wtf....later found out how his amp was dialed. To sound like a flub box.

It's just another tool at the end of the day and if you have a flubby amp or use 8 strings then cool. I just cannot get on board with dialing a good amp to sound bad and then repair it with a pedal. Above my pay grade.

Yea I get what Louis is saying, however outside of turning up the bass alittle more than I would with a different boost pedal like a maxon or something, I really don’t dial in my recto any differently. I think the clip I just posted above sounds great and it’s nowhere near super low tuned, but to each his own!

I had the bass dimed on the rec. This $60 pedal smoked the DT. I will probably buy another one based on the way it sounded with the Spec OP. My buddy has my Mr Hector on tour right now so I’d like to try it with that amp when he gets home

I get how people think differently. See I won’t some if that sound you call shrill . I need some of that . All my favorite tones have some . But I get it . I just love good bite on top

I'm more of a low mid kind of guy. But my ears are really old. I played in loud bands unprotected for a very long time and I'm certain my high frequency hearing loss has started.

I probably got some too . My dumbass use to practice in a room with full stack blowing my head . What’s weird is I hate the sound of cabs on top of a stack . It’s weurd I would do that when young

Same. I mentioned that in another thread when I was asking about my cab Jack's. Especially if it's a 2x12 up top.

Who needs to spend $200 on a dirty tree? Just put a 2x12 in your face on top of something.

I'm a slant cab guy myself.

But Jesus Christ on a Pogo Stick bouncing on your Step-Dad's trampoline!!!

That shit is nice. Nicely done.

Another good example of this, Dimebag's rhythm parts sound like shit on their own (really fizzy) but in a mix they just work.
