What guitar solo are you working on right this second?

Fo' sho! I liked Deris' sound in its own right. And Better than Raw brings back some awesome memories, being at Dynamo '98 Festival.
Saw Iced Earth there too in the marquee (while Pantera was playing main stage...apparently annoyingly drunk, as some friends went there and told me afterwards). Oh, and Death! Chuck in bleached high waisted mom jeans and a black t-shirt, IIRC. Steve Jobs' clothing choices aside, that was one hell of a show. :p

I feel bad for your friends, watching Pantera instead of absolute peak "something wicked" era iced earth lol

I've seen helloween a handful of times, rabbit don't come easy tour was the first one - in 98 I was 13 ?

I would have died to be able to go to Dynamo 98, especially at the time

Showtime by Jason Becker ( Roth track ) . And Hos Down by Jason Richardson with Rick Graham. Becker plays an amazing solo on the Roth song . Camels Nigh Out by Eric Johnson.

Yngwie's Magic Mirror and Extreme's Get the Funk Out. Both 95% ready but still cannot play them 9 out of 10 times without any hiccups. Starting to be on good side at least! ?
I lost that Tap section in funk daily to keep my tap skipping in shape . Nuno solos rule but funny too . It will bluesy modern shred then suddenly the tap skip is skew the solo to outer space instantly lol

Dolphin Race Greg Howe…he is a monster.

And some of my own stuff for an upcoming release of some sort.

Started learning the “No More Tears” solo note for note last night, I’ve gotten about 85% of it down before, mainly the beginning and end, but always kind of made up the double stop section. Just found an isolated guitar track of it and it’s much easier to pinpoint exactly what he’s doing.

That fucking tone is so damn good, too.

I’ll See You In My Dreams by Django. Pretty much the whole thing is a solo. And the phrasing is sick.

It's always cool when you can find an isolated track that made the cut and STILL know that even though he was/is a guitar god, he's still human, and lots of little things here and there that get lost in the mix and drowned out by everything else make it not perfect and totally doable for us mere mortals.

Good rips of those iso tracks are great to listen to, not just for figuring out parts but they give a pretty good example of some of our favorite tones and how they sound on their own. I always thought there was more distortion going on in that song, thought the palm mutes in the verse riff were hit a little harder than he did and thought there was basically endless sustain on those notes and none of that is true at all. Still can’t get over the hair on that tone, man. It’s the last 20% I can’t recreate.

I made that EVH Balance tone preset with my AxeFX and spent maybe 10 minutes on it, got close enough to be stoked about it. Made a Vai preset when he gave his effects blocks to Fractal for the holiday gifts and banged that out in 10 minutes. Spent an hour on this tone last night and managed to get 80% of the way and I’m coming up empty on how to get that final 20%.

I'll see guys who can pull off EVH, Vai, Petrucci, or Paul Gilbert with a fair amount of authenticity, which is always impressive.

But it really blows my mind when I hear someone copping Yngwie licks, coming anywhere close.
Don't forget the guys playing licks from these guitar greats have had 40 + years to figure the stuff out . The originals were playing that stuff before most of todays guitarists were even born .

There are also isolated guitar tracks by some legends that make you shake your head in disbelief how impeccable and mistake free it is lol.

Sykes: “Cryin’ in the Rain” is a constant struggle. I can get most of the sections reasonably close all by themselves - but stringing all the sections together? Smoothly? Fuuuccckkk…

I‘ve watched vids of folks pulling it off in one take with the original recording rolling in the background. They have my undying respect.
I would love to hear the sykes tone.. I’ll never be there but I try. I’ve gotten close to still of the night but that’s not too hard of a tune.

Well when you sell your soul to the devil, that tends to happen lol

I’ve been playing 40 years… but only after work… and then; not so much. I’ve also played lots of golf and basketball: not even close to Tiger or Michael. Some folks just have it. I don’t.

Whenever I get hung up on technique and speed, I remind myself - in the entire history of guitar playing...

.. sweep picking never made a girl wet.

That’s comical…. It reminds me of what my fat horrible looking buddy used to say about himself; “I might not be good looking but I sure look good sitting on this wallet!” I guess he would not be a sweep picker either.

I’ve honestly never copied a recorded solo in my 40+ years of playing.

I’ve copied phrases of solos when I played in a cover band when I was young, but after playing in an original band for 20 years, the urge to dissect other players left me.

I really do appreciate you guys that do this to improve your chops or gain insight into the way other player approach the instrument.
That’s pretty much me as well. When I was in cover bands I made sure the beginning and end of solos were as close as possible and the rest was just an “ish” version. Lazy or a result of mostly being self taught? Dunno, but that’s how it is. My buddy has been hounding me to learn a few songs for an open mic night (a whole other conversation imo) but it’s just not fun to figure out songs anymore.

This is cool, I’m going to learn it as well. I’m sure I’ll have to modify it because I’m not clean with sweeping up. ?
I have a few things I'm working on, some I posted some I haven't but it's all right hand stuff I'm focused on. Incredible how important picking is to get that tone u need for solos.
