I’ve been after a vertical 212 cab, and there’s a Z Best cab for sale at a decent price. It’s ported which I like the idea of. Anyone know much about these guys for rock or metal?
Well I’m down to that or a Marshall 1936 for the same price. It’s not about the brand name per se, but I can’t AB them so I have to wing it a bit. The Marshall is horizontal but it has creambacks which I’ve wanted to try. That said, the Z is vertical which I like and I could just swap in a creamback. Tough to know which way is best. Same price. Marshall is a bit of a drive to get.

I’ve used a 1936 for years. Nice cab. I think the big thing between the two will be directionality. Because of it having a port and being vertical you might not hear the Dr Z if you move left or right, if that matters to you.
what kind of music do you play? i tend to play pretty heavy music, but i don't see why a Marshall can't do that. folks tell me that creambacks aren't great for heavy music, but a lot of players i respect use them and their tone is glorious. i think it's worth a try

Being a total noob I’m just not sure if a 212 cab with creambacks is going to be vastly different/better than a rear loaded Diezel 412 with v30s? I’m sure it’s apples to oranges.

Right. V30s are very mid focused, while cream backs have their own tone. You really need to play the cabs with your amp (both at low and high volume, clean and distorted) to see what works for you.
I’ve not had a Z Best cab, but I’ve had a few of their combos and a 2x10. I didn’t dig the sound of the 10”s (I prefer 12”s), but their stuff is built very well. Super solid.
