a couple of points that I realize will be completely disregarded but i gotta say em anyway:
- Neither major American party bears more than a nominal resemblance to its original incarnation.
There are several historical reasons for this, but the easiest one to understand is that party affiliation in the South was largely flipped during the mid 1960s civil rights era, when the blue team at the national level aligned itself with the civil rights movement and against Jim Crow laws.
The Goldwater era shortly thereafter, had the same effect nationally.
- Neither major American party is “left” in any meaningful sense. The blue team is also a center-right conservative party. This has been the case for many decades but was particularly reinforced during the 90s, when the blue team abandoned a key part of its early support base, the labor unions, and aligned itself firmly with corporate interests.
