Been working on the modded schematic for the upcoming SD-1 variant I'm going to run .....
it's going to have a switch for asymmetrical / symmetrical clipping ..... and a switch to pick between 2 different diode types .
question is ..... what would you guys want for the second option ? Stock being 1N914/1N4148 's

I like LED’s as an option personally, mainly so I’m able to get higher volume out of the pedal. Which is nice for amps where a stock SD1 or TS isn’t quite enough boost by itself.

You’re speaking a language i don’t understand….but I think i like it.
different overdrives / boosts / distortions use different types of diodes in the clipping section of the circuit ... amps too ... like Zener Diodes and some amps like the Silver Jubilee and I believe the JCM900's use LED's in their circuits .
guys that have had a ton of overdrives / boosts ....... usually kind of know what they like ... for clipping diodes so I figured we'd ask .

I agree ..... they usually sound pretty good too

Could you make it switch from a SD-1 to a Rat pedal?

I voted leds, but no idea how they would sound different the 1n4148 diodes. I figured the leds would be most different with their forward voltage.

Haven't the SD-1 mods and copies already been done to death?

I usually associate the mods and copies with Tube Screamers. The SD-1 itself is a mod/copy of a Tube Screamer to an extent, though... somewhat... kinda. But 99% of the modded OD pedals that have asymmetrical clipping like the Plumes or the Full Drive seem either more Tube Screamer voiced or at least marketed.

I've got a overdrive circuit on my breadboard right now that I have been working on when I have time ... I'll eventually have it fabricated I think ... build a few of those ...

im a huge SD-1 fan. my favorite mod is to just jumper D6. Retains the attack but puts a wonderful focus on the lower mids.

The germaniums would be interesting since they have such a low forward bias. Despite being in the feedback loop, it still seems like you'd end up with a distortion pedal in that mode.

Maybe mix-n-match by keeping stock double diodes and just switch the single out with an LED.

Sounds like that might be similar to what the MXR Custom Badass OD’s boost button does.

The CBOD is my favorite OD with a Marshall and as most know it is another take on the SD-1. I wouldn’t mind yet another take though, and am intrigued by the different clipping and diode options.

good idea ...

interesting ......
I actually stumbled onto the jump d6 mod by 1st putting a germanium in there from a keeley kit. i really liked that but I knew the germanium would be having less effect than the stock diodes. that gave me the idea to just jumper it
