He gives some thoughtful insights here. And he's definitely not wrong!

Yep, the more modelers become what kids get into, the more they will never have a clue as to what really created what those 'presets' are..and how huge volume creates it's own tone unto itself...complete with controlled feedback, and how to work with that feedback, volume swells, etc..
It's not just 'turn up and stand back', it's learning how to play with and how to control that beast once it's unleashed.

Just like 'autotuned vocals', live guitar tone will become more generic, flat and uninspiring.

I really hope it’s like many other things that cycle out but then cycle back in. IME, you just can’t replicate a real Super Lead (and others) at volume. Like I’ve heard you say my friend…it’s a religious experience.

Uli is so fucking cool. Remember this gem:

Good read. To me a lot of current guitar tones are semi sterile. High gain amp. Boost pedal and active pickups. Same same.

I find that slightly warmer than PAF pickups change tone in high gain amps. Giving them different voice.

Go back and listen to British Steel. And that was heavy back in the day. It was the music not so much the tone.

Like he says lots of awesome players, nobody has their own distinct sound.

“Whenever I go and play in Italy with a different band, and then there’s a guy in the soundcheck — the engineer, the sound engineer — ‘Oh, mamma mia! You can’t play like that.'”

How can we always end up like that I wonder.

We could try his approach…don’t do sound checks with sound people we don’t know. But I feel that could lead to some really bad outcomes for JAGs like most of us.
