Big Midrange Sound Difference: Mesa Tremoverb/Peavey 6505+/Marshall

Happy New Year everyone! So yesterday me and my other guitarist changed our rehearsal room rigs; He swapped his Boogie Mark V 1x12 Combo & Mesa Recto Vertical 2x12 Cab with his Marshall JVM410H head & a Marshall MX212 loaded with one V30 and one GK12-100 and a Line 6 POD HD500X on the FX Loop for Chorus, Delay, and Reverb.

I swapped my old Peavey 6505+ Head (USA Made) with my Marshall 1960A 4x12 (2 Celestion G12T-75's and 2 WGS Retro 30's X patterned as the Peavey head has recently developed a very loud humming noise on the Lead channel and I got nervous and don't want to damage anything so I swapped with my 1995 Mesa Boogie Tremoverb converted to Head & the Mesa Tremoverb 2x12 cab (factory Vintage 30's) converted to closed back and a DigiTech RP360XP on the FX Loop for Chorus, Delay, and Reverb.

Now the DigiTech the expression pedal on it is set to do a volume boost when stepping on it and worked fine through the Peavey but with the Mesa, and I suspect it's because of the Parallel effects loop, the pedal did nothing and I had my Maxon OD808 hooked up thrugh the front end of the TVerb withe gain at 0 and the Balance at Max and the Tone about 12 Noon and it seemed to only act as a volume boost on the Orange channel but not on the Red channel?

It has to have been over a year or more since I last played through the Mesa Tremoverb rig and I must say, it was quite a contrast in sound versus my other amps and especially against my other guitarist's Marshall JVM410 rig! Just seemed like my Tremoverb was all "scooped" sounding even with the mid-range knob almost at 10 on the Red channel? It is running 6L6's in it. The Epiphone Alex Lifeson LP sounded good through it but the ESP LTD Kirk Hammett Signature KH-602 - Purple Sparkle sounded "hollow"??

In my testing, how two amps pair is very enlightening & often counter- intuitive. There's really no replacement here for trying different configs & see what works in your band.

For example I did some testing of my own last week. I'm in a one guitar band, but we had another guitarist over and jammed through some things just because. Since we were just messing around I swapped the various combos of my JCM800, Triple Recto & Mark IV. Keep in mind on their own, they all kill in their own way & I would happily gig any of them.

In this test with our band's sound here's what we got.
- The Mark & Recto pairing were too similar to each other & washed out.
- The Marshall & Recto pairing kind of fought each other. The Recto got real woofy & the Marshall mids just buried it.
- The Mark & Marshall pairing was a very nice compliment- both amps could be heard clearly. Even with the stronger mids of the Marshall, the Mark still had a place to sit & the bottom end didn't wash out.

There's no right answer, it's all about what works for your sound which starts by giving up what you think you like or don't like about each amp on its own.

We're a 5 piece Classic rock/hard rock/80's hair metal/90's on up cover band tuned to standard E tuning and drop D on 2 songs.

These were where the settings were when I initially was setting it up. I was having issues inserting the 3 pics. The settings obviously got changed after I turned the amp on and a lot of stuff backed down like the bass control on each channel but did not mess with any of the volume controls, won't do that until we have a full rehearsal.

Have your other guitarist keep the JVM and get your 6505 working. They pair together insanely well.

The higher the treble the less midrange and bass. With the treble max there is very little midrange and bass.
Gain is maxed. Nothing is going to make it louder in front of the amp with the gain max on the amp.

I can’t see the knobs…I hit mine with neon finger nail polish. Red for two, green for one….. also sometimes zero the treble and use the presence for treble if that makes sense….channel 1 orange can be pretty awesome…maybe try that. I have not touched it in a couple weeks so I probably got that wrong….lol

Yea those were pictures of the settings as I was setting the amp up before I even turned it on. I definitely backed the bass knob down and the eq settings still need adjusted. I think it's just on the Normal mode, no channel cloning, solid state rectification and Bold/Spongy switch on bold.

I've thought about using the Channel cloning switch and try to use the "Red to Vintage" cloning with my Tremoverb so that I can use the Clean on the Orange channel and the Vintage High Gain on the Red. Wonder how that would sound for the stuff we're playing?

The best luck ive had blending amps was to take my favorite amp, then take the most different amp you have and dial out ANY simularities, highlighting the main difference. Usually it’s in the midrange and lowering the gain on that amp can add tons of clarity!

is it the jvm or the 8100? i think bjorn went to jvm's in the last 10 years, but i kinda stopped following IF after about 04. was a super fan from 98-04, and saw them live like 20 times

I chased the clayman tone BEFORE IT WAS COOL
god, the tone from clayman to RTR was like going from epic to shit in one album. songs weren't terrible, but that "lets rent a house and make a studio" bullshit didn't do well for their sound.

Try boosting and lowering the gain. Higher gain settings on Rectos affect the bottom end, the more gain, the looser it gets. Like mentioned before, back off the highs to get more mids. Use silicon diodes and bold setting for a faster attack and tighter bottom end.
Try the orange channel cloned to modern, it will give you less of that Recto wall and a somewhat more organic sound but you will have to increase the treble on this one as it`s darker than the red channel.
