This took a lot longer than expected and I’m not 100% satisfied with my results so hopefully I get better and more efficient with this crap. Anyway….Luxxtone into the amp, amp into Captor X, then into a Volt 2 and off to Ableton. Spent a decent amount of money to find out I suck more than I thought I sucked.

What were your amp settings for the recording and what mic did you use on the cab? Was the mic was on the lower speakers or did you mic the speakers in the angled portion? Not to be a pain in the neck but I feel like there is something that could be optimized. A little more detail on your setup would be great and congrats on a really nice rig.

Shit, I remember 800’s being $300-$350. Nobody wanted them, you couldn’t give them away.
You never cared about letting one go because you could swing a dead cat and hit another one whenever you needed it. They used to be a meat and potatoes, working man’s amp. Now they’re just stupid. in the mid 90’s you could put together a JMP or JCM half stack for $800, sometimes less.

Yep. My first post here at RT; after lurking for a bit, was “Why do we all chase when a good boosted Marshall is the tone we’re all chasing.” Words to that effect anyway. IIRC, Cameron made a similar statement.

But it takes time for people to learn. Now that we have Powerstations/et al; volume is a non-issue. And lossless loops also played a part. So these great old amps have reemerged as the champions they were all along…only now with controllable volume.

I’ve tried lots of methods but the cranked Super Lead is too addictive for me. It’s THE feel and THE sound.

With the advent of so many pedals it’s more true than ever. Even though people swore by the TS9 or SD1 combo with a Marshall, that never was the sound I was going for. The only time I’d used a Rat was in the mid 80’s and I got a bad impression of that pedal because I was using it into shitty Solid state amps as a beginner. Back then (90’s) I would salivate over the VHT Ultralead, which was a crazy $1700 new because it was a straight in, no pedals required beast. My dream purchase lasted barely 2 years after I tried a 30th Anniversary Marshall that reminded me what I was missing. The other amp that was a deal that scratched that itch was the OG 5150.

These days with a few different drive and Fuzz pedals I can tailor a basic Marshall circuit into absolutely anything. Big, tight, loose, chewy, metallic, slightly fuzzed out and you get to turn them off and have straight Marshall glory that most high gainers can’t do. If I could only use one amp it would be a 1987 or 1959 circuit, all day, every day.

I tried getting the settings in the video clip. It was going into a Captor X so no real mic was used. In the captor I had a Marshall cab and a ribbon mic and 57 combo. I tweaked them to sound good through my headphones and hit record.

That’s just part of them. My username says it all. I just wish I wouldn’t have sold so many over the years. Days of the $500 JMP and $600 JCM 800 are long gone.
I know --I've owned a bunch of them and pretty much wish I had everyone of them back !!

I’m curious why you chose to use ableton?

Clip sounds good.

Because that’s what came with the interface. Another reason is a friend of mine uses it pretty proficiently so if I have any questions I can always ask him for help.

Ahh. Makes sense.

Have you ever used logic?
