How do you tame this beast without a master volume?

You don't.

That's the beauty of it.
Actually, you can grab a BE OD or have Griff make you a clone, like he did for me...and, since these are distortion pedals the volume knob will act as a Master vol and will attenuate the signal. Without the 'squish' of an attenuator.

Wait; you can crank the volume to taste then drop the OD (into input) to low and that’s that?

Dude I would buy it but it's not the Hermanson modded 52 stage gain , FJA , Moab unit . On a serious note ---Awesome head and GLWS !!!!!

I boosted my jcm800zw with an Ibanez tone lock distortion pedal….worked fucking great ?

Damn, should have jumped on this. Congrats on the sale and the buy lol

I’ve never tried this method but I’m surprised it hasn’t caught on if it can capture a great tone at reasonable volumes . Cool that it’s worked for you

Wolf Hoffman mentioned how he was able to dial up his Plexi to the sweet spot; then used a dist pedal's vol control to attenuate it down. Of course, you have to want and like the gain the pedal provides but if you are ok with a boosted Marshall tone, it works really well.
I like my 72 run this way better than any 2203/4 boosted, and any modded Marshall as well. But that's me.

Unboosted and cranked is amazing of course, but has its limitations gain-wise.
