Exclusive First Look! PMEQ Rev 2 vs EQF-2 PEQ, Mesa Mark 3, MoP Toanz

Super excited to bring this comparison first to the world! Tim from Master Effects reached out to me and asked me to do a comparison of this new revision of the PMEQ Pedal!

The original Aphex sounds better. You have the PMEQ set to have more high end.

I have the first version of the PMEQ and it’s cool. My only concern was the pop sound when engaging.

The PMEQ is definitely a lot brighter than the Aphex, mine could be out of spec since who knows when it was last serviced. I didn't want the setting to be too far apart, so I left it as is to get a more fair comparison when dialed in as close to the Rasmussen notes as possible.

Tim added a buffer to this version, maybe that helps with the pop?

He's made these pedals simply by following the schematics, so pretty impressive. I'm going to send him some gut shots soon, which may help improve the pedal even more.

He's also working on some super cool other stuff!

It’s splitting hairs. Turn the knob one way or the other to get them exact. No two items will ever be exact. Way too many variables. Tinker fucks like us let this little shit bother us. ?

I even went back to your other video and it was the opposite… the PMEQ sounded darker. ?. So you see, I have the tinker fuck disease as well.

I made a video of my PMEQ a few years ago on YT. I think it’s a great unit. A friend of mine had a few Aphex units so I’ve heard what they can do in person. ?

i love these vids. A friend and I did all this same shit back in the late 2000's, but back then, no one really talked about the importance of a parametric eq in getting those old school metallica tones. We were spending hours swapping different speakers into different cabinets, different tubes, all kinds of different approaches to the settings, but in retrospect i have no idea why we didn't A) film all of our experiments B) WE NEVER EVER FUCKED WITH OUTBOARD EQ'S!! it would have saved us so much time and frustration, but at least we learned a shit ton about stuff only us "tinker fucks" care about

I'm waiting for tim to get back to me about repairing or replaceing my PEM. its having some fuctionality issues and has been sitting in a box for a while. in the mean time, even though everyone thinks it sounds "sterile", i really like the empress para eq, and its kept me at bay while my pem is down. i cut 500hz, and 1.2k hz. its not quite MOP, but i'm happy with it. makes my mark IV combo sound like its not a combo.

Definitely agree here! I play so loud that some of the nuances likely disappeared in the room due to ear fatigue, they sounded dead on in the room! That's why you gotta take it to the mic, the mic will break it down in more detail!

Since the late 90's I've had some sort of EQ in my loops, but most of them were multiband preset type EQ that lives inside of multi effects units. I Hadn't really even heard of a Parametric EQ. Even if I did, they seem too complicated to use since it's much different than GEQ type EQ's. And let me tell ya, without Flemmings notes floating around the interwebs it would be super tough to dial in the PEQ how Metallica had it. There are so many small nuances that make a HUGE difference. That's why the PMEQ is so cool! Far less knobs and buttons to fiddle with, yet it will help you get those gnarly Metallica MoP tones! Now... I just gotta stack em and see if it does Justice
