REDBACKS are awesome.
I enjoy the fane F70 mix with them.

The H75 avatar version of the f70 is nice without being sharp on the precense.

The m65s sound like a better creamback to me.

I prefer top/bottom mixes vs X patterns.
Usually with the brighter speaker on the bottom.

I don't think I will ever like vintage 30's.
I do like the veteran 30s pretty decently.
They are currently above 2 Eminence v12.

The et65 lost definition in the lows quickly.
Governors had a weird mid range I didn't like.

Private Jacks are interesting like a much more intense greenback. I generally have to reshape the amp controls in the highs and lows to accommodate them they have a very unique voicing in the midrange.

K100 were fun but after a while something was nasal in the middle, and it started annoying me.

Swamp thangs have incredible articulation in the bass and are a stiff speaker. But I started to notice that while they are considered dark, the high end was stiff... seemed like they had very strong upper high end. Mixed feelings.

Elite 80's (classic lead 80) sound full and rich. But also, little strident up top. They say these mellow with heavy use. Cannot confirm but they worked well for mesa circuits for sure.

One of the many rabbit holes tone chasing and boredom will lead you down ?

My next cab will be a 3x12.
With a Redback and 2 of something else.

I looked at those and bought some Eminence PF-350a instead. Still not broke in. Then since I wanted an EV I went cheap and got a Force 12 for like 80 bucks. If you crank them they sound pretty good, very underrated. I have it paired with a K120 in a 69 Twin, partly because D/K120s are crazy money now and partly because for blues stuff it's a nice speaker combo.

I was looking at the EM12 also a while back before buying some redbacks. The more rare MS12 also. And that bn300 I think it was.

But for the weight difference and the tones.... the Redback hangs... and sounds better to me.



But... I think in a twin, and especially for jazz playing, or any type of clean edge of breakup... might prefer the EV / EM if it's in a 2x12 maybe. I'm about to build a couple of oversized 2x12 cabs soon.. and a 3x12. Or a couple. I have a few 4x12 and never had anything else other than 4x12 to this point. So i want to venture into the "less is more" territory with cabs and I love customization I get when building my own.

It is also much easier switching speakers around in a 2x12 rather than constantly mixing a 4x12 with speakers because they are always being colored by the other speakers in some small way.

It may also benefit where, a v30 does good under a mic I guess but my ears hate them in the room, so maybe a cab with 2 redbacks and 1 v30 would create enough offset for me to like it in the room more.

The EM12's seemed nice but in the demos it seemed like the regular EVM was a little better, maybe some more clarity. Same with the "overtonez audio" or whatever. Darker, woolier. I really wanted to sample some EM12 neos but didn't want to risk 400-500 bucks on a dice roll so I just bought the Paul Franklins, which is kind of like a higher power modded patriot comonwealth E120 style without the aluminum dome.

I still have a set of D120's in boxes cause I blow them up every year and I got sick of paying for recones, which has gone way up in price. The recone kit is nearing 100 bucks now. Wish I could find another K120 since they handle the volume much better than D's but the last good condition K's I saw were 500 bucks each.I need a couple more Twin for sampling speakers, lol

Tried mixing speakers for years, really wanted it to work…
Just didn’t happen for me.

All the speakers are the same in each of my 4x12s now.
I do, however, like running a Pulsonic cabinet with a blackback cabinet. ??

Tried WGS speakers and don't really like any of them. ET65, ET90, Retro30, Veteran30, Green Beret, etc. All of them have the same sonic quality. They sound good when played at low to mild volume. Start pushing them to band levels and they start to sonically fall apart and sound like mush.
I have a quad of Mojotone Greyhounds. They remind me of a cross between a JBL and a Celestion. Nice lows and highs with a hint more midrange than you'd get out of a typical American voiced speaker. I don't particularly care for them with British style amps; not enough mids. I think they're good for fender style amps if you want that character with a little bit more mids.

I've gravitated towards Weber speakers now. So far I've tried the Grey Wolf, Silver Wolf, and 15" Blue Dog. All of them sound great on their own and mix well with each other.
The Grey Wolf is my favorite. It basically takes the best qualities of a V30, CL80, & Blue and rolls them all into one.
My 412 is a Grey/Silver top-bottom mix. Grey wolfs take care of the upper mids and Silver Wolfs fill in the lower mids.
My other cab is a 212/115 with 2-Grey Wolfs on top and the 15" Blue Dog on bottom. Both speakers are in the same tonal range so it doesn't feel much like a blend. It's more of a Grey Wolf with extended lows & highs. It sounds massive.

It won't be any time soon, but I want to try the Black Shuck. I think it's named after The Darkness song, but CJ @ Weber says that's not the best representation of that speaker. He said it's more Black Sabbath type tone and is great with downtuned guitars.

I have a Michigan 15" in a low watt old Maestro amp and it sounded much better than a D130 when I tried switching it. It seems real neutral, I guess it's supposed to be an EV copy or something. How's the 15" Blue Dog?

Mine is the Alnico version. I really like it. It's relatively similar to a Celestion Blue with bigger bottom end that's not boomy and more top end sparkle without being too bright. It has good clarity and a nice vintage vibe, but can handle more modern hard rock just fine.

It might work okay in a Fender style amp, but the mids might be a little too much. I think it's better suited for a Vox or Marshall. The grind from those type of amps would pair well with the Blue Dog. From my understanding the Michigan is Weber's take on a 15" EV. Their California is supposed to be similar to D130. I'd probably go with one of those for a Twin or similar.

In general I usually got better results using full quads of the same speakers, but some mixes I really loved as some of my favorites were redbacks on top of either JBL D120F’s or E120’s (both sounded monstrous), 20w GB’s/JBL D120F’s on bottom Ala EVH, 20w GB’s/Altec 417C’s on bottom good too. I’ve had even less success with crosses, but I found the Alnico Gold’s crossed very well with ‘80’s vented T75’s and V30’s. Usually these mixes seem like there’s some clashing or maybe diminishing of some frequencies to me, but when it’s right it’s very right IME

It's not a guarantee it'll happen by any means, but I've seen them vibrate loose more than a few times. And if you're going to mismatch impedance, don't do it on the 16ohm tap.

12L > EM12. And the 12L mixes well with a lot of speakers while the EM12 didn’t seem to mix with anything.
