I’ve got a stash of just over 200 preamp tubes……about 10% of those are NOS. I’ve come to the conclusion that all my amps (all Morris amps) sound best with the same tube configuration regardless of # of gain stages.

Gold pin JJ 83s in all other positions
There is a significant difference in the gold pin. Don’t think it’s the gold but rather hand selected maybe. They are brighter, smoother, and less congested in the low mids.
I personally can’t stand the Tung Sols. The Ruby AC5’s are OK, but mid/highs overkill if you use too many. The best sounding of my older tubes are the 90’s era Chinese with the square getters…….but they lack a little gain. I also have some old JJ83s that are unmarked that came out of an ENGL that sound great. Totally different than current JJ83s. Tubes are a crapshoot.
