What's the difference between a Ruby 12AX7AC5 HG and a 12AX7ACZ HG??
Nothing about the ACZ on their website..
I have both and they are Chinese..

Necro bump meets AI search:

"Both "12ax7acz hg" and "12ax7ac hg" are essentially the same type of preamp tube, with the key difference being that "12ax7acz" is a specific designation often used by manufacturers like JJ Electronics, while "12ax7ac" is a more generic identifier, and the "HG" in both cases signifies a "High Gain" grade, meaning they are designed to provide a higher gain level than standard 12AX7 tubes, making them suitable for high-gain amp circuits.

Key points to remember:

  • "ACZ" vs "AC":
The "ACZ" in "12ax7acz" is a manufacturer-specific designation, usually referring to a JJ Electronics tube, while "AC" is a more general identifier for a 12AX7 tube

You don't read so well..

I’ve got a stash of just over 200 preamp tubes……about 10% of those are NOS. I’ve come to the conclusion that all my amps (all Morris amps) sound best with the same tube configuration regardless of # of gain stages.

EH 7025 in V1 and phase inverter
Gold pin JJ 83s in all other positions

There is a significant difference in the gold pin. Don’t think it’s the gold but rather hand selected maybe. They are brighter, smoother, and less congested in the low mids.

I personally can’t stand the Tung Sols. The Ruby AC5’s are OK, but mid/highs overkill if you use too many. The best sounding of my older tubes are the 90’s era Chinese with the square getters…….but they lack a little gain. I also have some old JJ83s that are unmarked that came out of an ENGL that sound great. Totally different than current JJ83s. Tubes are a crapshoot.
