This aged nitro Mayones Aquila came earlier this past week and I actually really like it and love the color too lol. The stock pickups though are some of the worst I’ve heard, maybe giving these guitars a worse rap than they deserve, but could still tell right away unplugged that it’s a very good guitar and once I put in good pickups it became what I expected from it plugged in

I definitely hear the more nuanced, open nitro sound with it (would be better with shellac finish, just saying). It can be described maybe like that way vs the typical Mayones Regius’s or Duvell’s that have that more choked furniture with strings attached sound or also like a more modern, precise sounding aged nitro Charvel CS and for less than what those go for. I won’t overhype it or say it’s the level of Marchione’s, Deimel or the best vintage stuff I’ve tried, but has enough of its own thing I like that at least for now will play it often

Great playability as Mayone’s typically have. Doesn’t have that unfair talent boosting effect in sleek playability like Marchione’s, but about as good for me as the good aged nitro Charvel’s, which until I tried Marchione’s thought were as good as it got for super strats (I was wrong). I haven’t liked much the many other Mayones’s I’ve had or tried probably from the combo of poly or oil finish and those wood specs sterilizing the tone (like those 11-13 piece necks especially), but this one keeps it simple with specs much better for tone: just a red alder body (big alder fan), maple neck/board, nitro. There still is just a bit of that clinical Mayones quality to the sound and overall vibe, but overall really like it still. For something modern(ish) I think it’s quite good

Beautiful guitar, I've always loved the QC and playability of Mayones, just absolutely hated the pickups, much like you Sam

They’re called Mayones Velvertone Ironside + Sodium. Just awful. I assumed at first they must be BKP’s from their sound and feel, but I guess not lol

Sorry. I meant to ask what you replaced the stock pickups with.

Yes I couldn’t believe how bad they sounded, especially with how good the guitar sounded unplugged. I agree! I always loved their looks, playability, QC, just not the sterile furniture with strings attached type of sound. Now I can finally be happy with a Mayo!

I’ve done a few swaps already and still deciding what I wanna settle with. They all sounded great in their own ways. First was a Lundgren M6 bridge/‘70’ Bill Lawrence L90 neck, then ‘70’s Tim Shaw Mini-humbuckers, a few other mini-humbuckers. Will see what I stick with ultimately. As long as I stay the hell away from the stock pickups or BKP’s I don’t think the guitar will not sound great

Happy NAD bro! A nice fixed bridge SS is always welcome 😁🤘🏻
Agreed. I prefer a fixed bridge where the strings go through the body. Not a fan of the way Floyd’s or Kahler’s make the tone worse. The specs are all there minus the stock pickups lol. If it just had shellac finish or relic’d like Peter’s it would be perfect

dude, own it longer with a couple dumb friends like I have, and it will look like Peter's, lol. It's badass man.

For pickups now I have in it a set of ‘70’s Gretsch TK300’s, so it looks the same basically lol

As far as humbuckers go I really only need vintage Gretsch’s in my life lol. Hard to be without their addictive grind and bite making other pickups lack aggression

That's quite a chasm between the bridge pup and bridge saddles. Not surprised a more bitey pickup is needed.

Glad you enjoying it 🤘🏻

Yeah I would definitely prefer if it were closer to the bridge. It sounds very good with not bite-y pickups too. Even as is it's at least brighter and snappier sounding than Gibson's, but I think I do hear the effect of its placement. I do at least love the placement of the neck pickup being where it is for a sweeter, more liquid-y sound

The current Gretsch pickups in it aren't actually the most bite-y pickups they made. They're thicker, more throaty growl, less attack-y and a little hotter sounding than other Gretsch pickup models (besides the Supetrons for heat), but still have that signature Gretsch grind going on, but not as much so as their '60's and '50's pickups. I will probably try one of those next and like them more in it
