Anyone want to talk about DSL's?

The "DSL/TSL can't do metal thing" is either from the result of one of two things, IMO:

1. people that don't play in a band that like using TONS of gain (that would sound SHIT live or in a recording) don't like them.

2. People that prefer the more modern lower mid voicing of Mesas/bogners/framus etc.

IMO, the crunch channel on the DSL is sweet, and with a boost is great. My brother has one and while I prefer my Bogner, I could definitely get by with the DSL no problem. I'm not as partial to the lead channel on the DSL as I am the crunch channel though.

Not really into the amps, but I love these! :la:

They aren't my favorite but it is a better amp than the TSL. I really wanted to like the DSL40cr but it sucked compared to most other amps in that price range. It's like it was built to be just O.K., usable, but there are so many other options.

Like this thread from '07, that's about how long, or longer I've hoped Marshall would get their shit together and offer something super great, like Boogie has done.

I was thinking i got away with the necro here

The DSL and TSL are pretty much identical amps, with the TSL obviously having an extra channel. I personally prefer TSLs, and been playing one for 25 years now. This is my “go to” amp when looking for a JCM800 type sound.

Nuno uses dsl’s a lot doesn’t he? I tried a dsl 1x12 combo that was good also. Not a bad amp

I had it, I didn't like it at all, it played crappy. Then the buyer came, turned it on, started playing and I almost fainted, how amazing it sounded. Often it's just in the hands.
That is how it goes sometimes. I sold an evh stealth cab. Day buyer gets it, he brings a silver jubilee, and God sound came out of it. I really considered just rescinding it and buying a jube

I think I’m the only person here that thinks they’re pretty cool. Maybe not the highest quality sound but the voicing of the various modes is right up my alley and super versatile. Could definitely get a gig done with one and be totally happy

I agree, I’m always defending my 100H here. I’m not gonna say it’s my favorite amp or anything, but I would have no problems at all if that was all I had

I use my DSLs for stereo with my synths.
That's about the only use they get.
Also, this thread is really old, Smash. :ROFLMAO:

When I A/B'd the JCM 2000 DSL and TSL against each other, the DSL had a much heftier low end and much more body, while the TSL sounds much leaner by comparison. This remained true no matter how I dialed the TSL.

If you like or even prefer the sound of the TSL, that's cool, but the amps are quite different.

Well, we don't need to go into the rabbit hole on this. Fundamentally you are right, they are not identical as the TSL is a 3-channel preamp so the schematics is a bit different. Admittedly, not by much and only for the 3rd channel preamp part. The rest of the amps, and the power amp section is identical on these amps.

The reason you heard the TSL being leaner is most likely attributed to either trying an early revision (where Marshall ###ed up the PCB components, and people like me needed to replace the main PCB board when the fix became available), or just the normal component value drift/variation which can range in 10 to 50% or even more in many cases. All amps sound different from each other, one DSL can be as much different from another DSL as TSL vs DSL or TSL vs another TSL. That's why we all try different amps and grab the one that speaks to you.

For all seriousness, being leaner or fuller does not change the substance of the sound of an amp, and can easily be corrected by either the on-board EQ or an external EQ.

All I can say, neither my ears nor a lab spectrum analyzer could not tell a difference between my JCM800 and the TSL in the 800 model. Less so with the DSL vs TSL in the same room through the same speaker cab at the same time.

"Lab spectrum analyzer," though.

Post a clip.
