Recently got duped on a Surefire Counterfeit. I didn't even know this was a thing! Got it from a local passing it off as real.

Well, instead of sulking about it, I wanted to make a video showing how to identify the fake and the differences in light at night with a real X300U (600 Lumen) vs. the counterfeit which from the best I can tell is supposedly 500 lumen.

The genuine Surefire Tailcap actually mounts up and works perfectly as well, so the clone seems to be fairly accurate in quite a few different ways.

Anyway, hopefully no one else runs in to this same problem.

How to Easily ID a Fake Surefire X300:

Brightness Comparison Real vs Fake

Took it to the range yesterday, fired 200 rounds without an issue.

They show up at gun shows fairly often.
The aluminum thread machining on the main bulb housing is usually cleaner on the real Surefire due to a higher quality material being used in the first place. The fake is usually a grainier cut for the threads. Hard to spot unless you unscrew it but only takes a second to do

I've never unscrewed the bulb housing, didn't even know you could! I'll have to check that out.

I did make a video with some easy ways to spot the fake though:
