Sourmash cabinets.... Good Bad Ugly, or ?

Any of youse guys have or have owned a Sourmash cabinet ? Most specifically here a slant 4x12 ??
 
Had the 1936 2x12. Great craftsmanship but sounded small next to my other 2x12’s. Maybe it was just my ears, but even my Mojo oversized Canyon 1x12’s were bigger sounding.

Their headshells are as high quality as you can find on the consumer market, as well.
 
Somehow he engineered it to only fit single-channel amps, and if you leave it in a room with any guitar that has a neck pickup it spontaneously combusts and burns down your house and the heretic guitar with it.
I think @Smash is more a 16x12 guy. This is still a grab’n’go rig to him:

I found a 4x12 for not much more than the price of the speakers..... may need to investigate. Got to run my 3rd Power CSR 40 at cranked volume through an older Marshall 4x12 over the weekend and it was an ear opener for sure.

I'm not a fundamentalist of any cab configuration - I own 4x12s, 2x12s, and a 1x12, all for various purposes and situations, and they all sound great. And in front of a close mic the differences are minute, mostly in the low end and perceived "bigness"

...But anytime you can open an amp up wide like that, IMO a 4x12 is always gonna shine brightest, all things being equal. Even if the smaller cabinets can handle the juice. 4x12s are what our ears are used to hearing for those cranked tones number one, and number two they push more air, number 3 the small variations between the speakers create a massive sound that can't be otherwise replicated.

I agree on all, I'd just say some 112's I've played with unique designs can have a certain clarity to them IME and I find with most amps under 20w (not for metal or hard rock) I seem to often actually prefer them through smaller cabs like 212's or 112's. Through 412's it's like they don't push them enough (even dimed) to get them going in a way that can make the sound actually more laid back. I don't currently have any amps that low wattage nor do most here, but still something to note

It was kind of disappointing in a way when I've close mic'd some of my 112's and it sounded not much different than my 412's lol. It's part of though why I also am not as much of a recording guy

Yeah that's one of the first lessons you learn micing up cabinets, right after "wow all four of these speakers sound different on this 4x12" and "Glenn fricker is wrong"

Anyone can get there with micing up amps it's just a matter of how much time you want to invest

Yeah I always when I get new speakers to me AB them in isolation (not in cab) to others, so I'm well aware (if anything better than most I'd imagine) how the same version speakers vary, but as a recording newb it was surprising/somewhat disappointing to hear in the past how it results mic'ing 412's vs 112's. If I was one of those recording only guys maybe I'd only own 112's lol

I haven't made it through more than 1 or 2 minutes before max of a Fricker video, so I'm not sure about that part LOL

Its been years since I've owed a 4x12, really moved them only because of their size. I've got a few killer 2x12's and equally killer 1x12's that get the call depending on the need. I may need to just step up and get one....

I play my smaller cabs when the situation calls for it and they do well

It's always nice to have the big guns around for when you're able to actually use them though you know?

yeah 90% of the time it would be overkill, at least the clubs we're regularly in. There's that last 10% though hahaha

With my cover band the 1x12 is the way to go 90% of the time

With my punk bands it's the 4x12 for me (and every other band) 100% of the time

It's not just the size of the venue but the amount of sound reinforcement that's the real reason
 
Ive bought several Sourmash custom head cabs and one combo cab. They’ve all been good. If it’s custom, quadruple check everything. One of my custom head cabs they got the front panel opening wrong, so there is a tiny gap at the top. Somehow they got the back right but the front wrong. They offered to make it right but I just took a slight discount/refund.

I ordered a “69 Marshall head cab” and it was the tall Marshall head cab instead of the shorter ones (which was what I got when I ordered a “68 Marshall head cab”). I think the shorter ones look way better. That’s on me tho, should have quadruple checked that.

Regarding 4x12 vs others, the 4x12 just has the sound for me. But I think my second favorite is 1x12. With a 1x12 there is none of that filtering/interference that happens with multiple speakers so it just sounds different. Everything is so clear, but that’s not always preferred. Sometimes that smearing that happens with multiple speakers is exactly what we want.

It might be coincidence but it seems if playing loud-4x12 sounds better. Not loud-1x12 sounds better. But of course that’s usually the way it goes so…:dunno:
