In response to him i said lets call off the EP, happy to still play casually like he mentioned. Next thing you know he's done a complete 180 and changed his whole character and blocked my number lolol. Moral of the story is always listen to random strangers on the internet.
You didn't need that guy in your life.

And to point out how much of a comedian the universe is, the next day i see Opeth on a PRS ad talking about intonation and how PRS intonate so well on recordings. I'm pretty sure Opeth was his favourite band.
Glad you weeded out the crazy before it wasted $.

I had a bass player once...easy enough to get along with, at rehearsal it seemed ok but we play loud in a small room so who knows? He had impressive tracks from his previous band so I thought knew how to studio track.

I bring him into my studio and every note is buzzing so badly that there was little to no note. He also simplified every riff to the point where he was riding the open string all the time, causing all kinds of minor 2nds. I offered my bass but he insisted no, it had to be his buzzy bass. I created TABS so that he would know the chord changes but he tossed that aide as an insult. So annoying that he couldn't clean that stuff up and actually learn the riffs. I think the last band was another bass player because this guy was so exposed when under headphones.

I still was going to be patient, but the guy said he didn't have the cash to buy new strings and a setup. My empathy ran out when the very next conversation he showed me all the new tattoos that he was getting all over the place, describing the 1000s of dollars it would take to finish these tattoo projects. When we tossed him, he was seriously bewildered.

moral: Most players like to jam but have no idea how to record; ie keep their instrument in tune, learn the material, and play in time.

That is too true. Lots of people like being a guitar/bass player more than they like actually playing guitar/bass.

part of sounding good is wanting to sound good and doing what it takes to get there. that means addressing it and putting in work when you sound bad. that also means its gonna hurt a little each time you realize you need to improve. everyone at some point will sound bad

most people don't like the hurt / work part. most people don't sound good

You need to find bandmates here on RT. They will have a different bass for each song. A new bass every 2 months. They will obsess over string brand.,guage, tone, recording software, instrument setup have multiple amps ect, that's my advice.

Those are people who never get anything done either.

Yeah there's definitely a dividing line between the hobby guys and the band guys, and it's obvious on RT - no shade though - Industry needs people making it a hobby to stay afloat

It's just a waste of time to try to do a legit band thing with someone married to that mindset. Where like the most important thing before you even write songs or practice is to buy copious amounts of gear lol

"We can't do the band yet man, I need that SSL 4000 board, or else how can we get this thing off the ground?!"

I have friends like this. It's infuriating.

The bottom line is me and you are lucky to be doing what we are doing because it is so hard to put together the right group of guys. If you can get it off the ground and get gigging regularly, quality gigs, and raise your profile a bit the more players are going to chase you down for a gig and then you wind up with some additional names for when players don't work out. The downside to that is you go to your local blues jam and "if you ever need a harmonica player" guys are after you.

For me, it's guys who can barely write Nirvana or Blink 182 style music harassing me to join their band and "put some sick solos" on their tunes. Ah yes, Green Day, well known for their SICK SOLOS

Like bro your drummer doesn't even tune his drums or play rimshots on the snare, and your bass player wears sock with his sandals, i'm pretty sure after one practice I would physically assault your entire band

The punk rock version of a harmonica player.

That no-rimshot stuff among drummers has become a real plague. The guys doing that think they are being tasty but it just cost them a bunch of gigs. It's hard to find blues players who understand that these days so many times I would look for more rock oriented guys who wanted to expand into blues, just because they actually possess a rimshot. I had guys literally spite me on a stage after I told them "hit hard and have good time and the gig is yours". Some guys would start off strong but their default mode is hitting like a pussy so they got sorted out within a few tunes.

Oh my god it IS like a plague.

Like dude, there are definitely situations where you want to hit the drums like a bitch. But your default should be hitting the drums consistently, and that means hitting it reasonably hard. If you hit soft, you literally CANNOT hit the drums consistently.

It's not even just rock, it's all genres now - people watch too much instagram and think they're making loops for a rapper instead of making live music.

I’ve learned the hard way to only invest time in people that are on the same page as me. Not just style but goals, work ethic, and attention to detail. Otherwise you just end up butting heads or worse, carrying them.
Bingo.

Even if the goal is something small you gotta be on the same page or it's not going to work. And if it does work it really won't because you'll be miserable. 6 years, no new strings, no proper tuner and he gets defensive. Red flag.

Trust me one of my longest tenured bands was that way, there was always some BS going on but I stayed 7 years because I dug the music so much and when it was working we were pretty bad ass. Especially when everyone was helping row the boat. Problem was I was always rowing the boat and those guys jumped in when it benefitted them.

My next band was probably my least favorite music wise but the most enjoyment I ever had in a band because everyone carried their weight. In fact it was my last band because of my age and the fact that I figured end it all on a great experience with a great bunch of guys.
