For you conspiracy fans: The Grunge Conspiracy

Never liked grunge. Actually quit a hair band that wanted to add Smells Like Teen Spirit, and Man in the Box.

As someone that was there. My best friend back then was Larry Brewer. The guy that recorded everyone in grunge. This videos is silly.

The entire movement was made out of about 25 people. Who made it had way more to do with who was fucking who than anything else.

I left the entire thing when my girlfriend got pregnant.

I'm definitely more of a hair metal guy than a grunge guy musically, but there doesn't even need to be a conspiracy - it ran its course, and the record companies found something new to hitch their wagon to.
agree. at least record companies used to do that, look for new music trends.... vs today where they seem averse to any risk, or any new music.

I still debate which genre is worse save for a couple decent bands within both of them are worthwhile.
I'm with you von!
Not sure which of the two genres mentioned had more bands that I would listen to?

I'm into metal, blues and jam bands...
Not much into grunge and fag rock.

Edit: my exception is KISS.

I did thrash and hair metal; hair metal had bigger venues, more venues, more money and more women at the shows. when grunge came in, hair metal was still popular, but my hair band wanted to add some grunge and I didn't, so I quit...thrash was also dying out around there too

I went into prog and death...much smaller crowds, less money, less women, until my last death / black metal band that had an established local name and following in the area.

The question is why couldn’t the two genres coexist? There was actually some killer stuff they came out in 1992-3 from Extreme, Winger, Warrant, some others. I mean III Sides from Extreme is an amazing album that got swept away by the changing tide.

By 1995, Satriani had a shaved head, as did Eddie, and everyone was playing sad music.

Agree. I thought Skid Row's Subhuman Race (95) was one of their best, going heavier than Slave to the Grind.

If Andrew Wood had lived to front Mother Love Bone; would they have been popular enough for 90s rock to have turned out differently?

I think the death of glam rock/hair metal had more to do with it having become a parody of itself so many times over.
This applies to me for sure. I hated hair/glam metal and the 90s was a time I was finding lots of new music to go along with the few new-ish metal bands I was into like Pantera and Extreme.

But it wasn’t all grunge. I didn’t like Nirvana at the time and Pearl Jam lasted about as long as Evenflow. But there was:
Eric Johnson
Dream Theater
Tool
Rage Against the Machine
Kings X
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Korn

And then I still love AIC and STP and lots of Soundgarden.

couldnt watch for more than 10 seconds with that dudes face being too close for comfort. people were sick of dudes dressed like woman playing cheesy metal, and was grunge was the perfect counter to that, theres no conspiracy.

I keep praying hip hop will have its hair band smells like teen spirit moment soon

Hoped the KL halftime show might start the revolution but apparently not

80s glam metal died because it had watered down to bands like Firehouse. Metal was on the rise to mainstream. Bands like Metallica, Megadeth and Pantera didn't need to wear makeup to sell albums. I enjoyed some of the bands that got lumped into the "grunge" moniker. Candlebox, AIC, STP, etc...

There was a lot of good music that came out in the 90s. Dream Theater. Queensryche's Promise land. King's X. I really dug bands like Cry of Love, Brother Cane, Black Crowes, etc.

Appetite is what killed Hair Metal. It just didn’t know it for a little while. Especially once Axl ditched the hairspray. They made it look dangerous and dirty again and suddenly all of these poodle bands with songs crafted and polished by Producer’s and studio guys really stood out as the corporate formula that they were.
With grunge it fed a hunger for authenticity in music that GnR had stirred in ‘87. When Soundgarden, AIC and Nirvana hit, they got it. Music written and played by the band with unique voices and sounds particular to each band. Unfortunately also came the flood of bands that weren’t great players. It made the audience feel connected to them as regular people I guess. It didn’t do anything for me because I, as a player I wanted to hear good playing but I understand how it connected with a general audience.
I personally was more into post hardcore, metal (death/speed/classic), industrial stuff and straight up hard classic rock at the time, as “grunge” after ‘92 just started sounding like pop music to me. But the first two full lengths from SG and AIC I still like a lot.
