Biggest steal you've ever gotten a piece of gear for?

Rivera m100 for $200 and a shitty distortion pedal.
(I don’t even remember which pedal it was)
Bought it from crankster up in Clear Lake CA.

I've never gotten a great deal on anything. I've had some good deals, but nothing to rave about.

But speaking of steals, I actually knew someone long ago that had a Les Paul Custom. This was when I was 17 and he was 16. I wondered how the hell he could afford it. Many years later found out from another source that he walked out of a music store with it. I lost a lot of respect for him after that. Worse of all, it happened to a local music store.

As someone who STILL pines after that LPC that got stolen, I'm pissed at the dude you know because somehow it feels correct

I seriously would give up every guitar and amp I own for that Les Paul custom, it was MY guitar

Are you saying you had one stolen?? You don't live in Kansas do you?

So weird that you say that because years ago we had our old place broken into and a bunch of empty guitar cases were stolen, except for one that had my Father's (technically my Brother's after he passed away) 77ish LP deluxe in wine red with minibuckers stolen. I have a picture of it somewhere. We should have a thread for lost/stolen property.

No, I don't live in Kansas, I live in Washington State

I'm just pissed that this dude got a Les Paul custom without paying for it because it seems like unfinished karma

Ah, I'm sorry to hear that. I had 2 guitars stolen in the past. Once was my fault for leaving the garage door open. That was a Blade RH4 in blue, worth about $700 at that time. I had my Ibanez Roadstar in black stolen when someone broke into my friends home where our band practiced. Whoever stole it ended up returning it, but they left it outside on a rainy day. It got totally ruined. No big loss, but it was my first electric.

But in regards to karma, it always comes, good or bad. Everything gets paid for eventually. I'm still burning through mine.

1973 Jose Ramirez 1A Brazilian Rosewood. ( with10 year old appraisals in the case, one for 5900 and another for 6k). 20.00 at an estate sale

other notables

Soldano X88 R for 400.00
Soldano Slo 100 Rackmount. 900.00. which I then traded for an OG Bogner Fish and early 90's Ibanez JEM DSY.
Bogner XTC 100b. serial #1. ( - - /). in flight case. 1850.00. not THAT great of a deal at the time, but cool because it was 001
Duffs SLO 100. 1400.00.

Biggest steal I ever got on a piece of gear just happened this afternoon when a box arrived and when I opened it there was a pretty sweet boots pedal inside. I hadn't even ordered anything. It just showed up.

Yeah honestly we should that'd be nice.

Its been like 23 years so I don't know if any pictures survived but the guitar had a very distinctive buckle rash on the back (from the studded belts I still wear to this day) so I would know it anywhere.

The last guy who had it was this guy bill in Moses lake, but he ghosted me when I explained what it was and offered to buy it back. Which sucked.

Crazy part is that bill had a wine red 77 deluxe too. Same craigslist listing

Now I wouldn't even have the cash to do so, so I wish he didn't get squirrelly, but it eats at me

Mesa MKIII+ Red Stripe w/ R2 mod for $600 at Cerritos GC back in 2012. I was familiar with R2 mod but had no idea at that time Mesa did a + mod on III’s. Wasn’t a Mesa aficionado like I am now but it made sense later when I sold it, the guy didn’t ask for a discount on my asking price and said “oh, you didn’t mention this was a + model” 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

I had no idea Mesa did + mods on III’s and thought he was the newb who thought he had something special. It’s nice to finally confess that embarrassing story.

2nd place goes to Randall Nuno 412 cab for $200 at Brea GC. They come stock with Greenbacks so I basically paid for 2 used speakers and the rest of it was for free. Awesome cab BTW

I bought my first PRS from Ward Brodt Music in Madison Wisconsin in 1995 - Custom 24 10 top - brand new for $1000. They were no longer going to be a dealer so they were blowing them out. Still have it and love it to this day.

Recently a friend of mine gave me a Mesa Mark IIC that he was having issues with and was just done with it. I shipped it to Boogie for the Mike B treatment and it is now a favorite and breathes fire with new caps and the + added.

In 2018 or 2019 I got a closet kept Mark IV combo with EV plus the matching extra 1x12 that was available for them. Original Sylvania power tubes and covers for both. $750.

I've been thinking about this. I think what I would view as deals now are just relative to current prices.
Examples:
1979 Les Paul Custom with chainsaw case for $500 in the mid-90s
Hamer Special FM for $500 in the mid-90s
1979 Les Paul Artisan for $1800 about 15 years ago. Flipped it and made a grand.

Excellent deal then, my brother. You better put that to good use to help play some sweet sweet melodies on a James Tyler.

I got a Jackson custom shop like the jack butler model except silver sparkle color that Matt's Music did a special run on. Paid $650 for it off the GC used site in mint condition with case. Like a dumbass, I later sold it for $1500. Really wish I still had that one.

I've been playing the guitar for what seems like forever at this point, but growing up my parents never allowed me to have more than one 1-2 guitars and my DS-1 served me well until I got an MT-2 lol. And in my 20s and 30s, I simply had other priorities. So now, finally in my 40s, I'm able to splurge a bit, but I've only been buying gear for a few years now.

The best deal I've gotten was that DSL20 from ProAudioStar for like 220 taxed and shipped.
I've made out on some pedal trades in terms of monetary value (Blues Driver for a Walrus M1, OBNE Pardner for Boss RT-20), but that kind of value is in the eye of the beholder. Trades are tricky to evaluate.
Scored a really good deal on a Walrus Meraki cause it came in a pedal lot. I sold the other pedals and ended up keeping the Meraki for a net of about $250.
CE-5 for $40.
Strymon Sunset midnight edition for $80.
