My band started recording again yesterday after several years. Curious what is available currently.

Most interfaces give you a Bundle with a basic License for Multi Tracking..
I'm still using Cubase Studio 4 from like 2006? LOL
I don't need anything else..

Another reaper dude here. I ended up paying for a license eventually but I think that was pretty cheap too

I also paid for license, but it is unnecessary. The only downside is even buying it, it keeps asking you to buy it

A friend makes seriously banging tracks with it using stock plugins, and FAST.

Cakewalk has a free DAW, with options to upgrade to Pro.

Reaper is technically $60, but it is a great software. You wont get as much for so little anywhere else.

I used to love n-track back in the day. Today, Reaper.

Another vote for Reaper here. Been using it since the first beta release.

It's not really free but you can perpetually use it in trial mode. The 60$ fee will get you through two versions. As an example, at the moment it's v7 and you pay you'll be good up to v8.99.

Winamp is one of the greatest software ever

Not free, but I've been using Ableton Live Suite for years; has plugins / components for everything including mixing and mastering; and Max for Live to build your own anything with a full ecosystem of Max for Live components free and paid; one of my favs is OSCiLLOT that I've owned for years = a Moog+ modular synth component, and many others.

Interface has a few fit-for-purpose views for composing, arranging, recording and live performance.

Reaper can be complicated for new users, as can most DAW's.

I therefore suggest Audacity.
