It's pretty disgusting. They basically hired thugs and bought off sheriffs to intimidate miners. There was some real shit going on as late as the 70's. Plenty of good docs on youtube about it. They sidestepped the problem by moving to strip mining, which you are familiar with. Big pharma stepped in to hook all the out of work miners with back pain on pills and by default, the rest of the community. Deep shaft mining is more friendly to the environment. With strip mining they are supposed to restore and plant the mountains they rip apart but it's just idle talk. Take a look at google maps in WV, you can see all the places they literally tore mountains down. Pockmarks on one of the most beautiful areas in the country.
