New research reveals that Earth is trapping over twice as much heat now compared to two decades ago. This energy imbalance—the difference between the heat absorbed from the sun and the heat the planet sends back to space—has jumped from about 0.6 to 1.3 watts per square meter since the early 2000s. Most of this extra heat ends up in the oceans, which soak up around 90% of it, while the rest melts ice and warms the land and air.

Think of it like a growing bank account balance: more heat is coming in than going out, causing the planet to heat up. That’s why average surface temperatures have already risen by roughly 1.3 to 1.5°C since pre-industrial times.

What’s worrying is that climate models didn’t fully anticipate this sharp increase. Scientists suspect changes in cloud cover may be partly to blame—white, reflective clouds that help cool Earth are shrinking and being replaced by darker, less reflective clouds. Cleaner ship fuels reducing sulfur pollution might also be a factor, but the exact causes remain uncertain.

This rapid heat buildup means more severe heatwaves, droughts, flooding, and marine heat events lie ahead. The only climate models matching current observations warn of even faster warming if emissions aren’t cut urgently. Experts also worry that funding cuts to satellite monitoring could hamper early detection of worsening climate effects just when we need it most.

My country is over 75% hydro and geothermal electricity. Wind and solar are growing to fill all new demand, just like in Texas.

America will get there eventually, unfortunately too many people in power still profit off oil for now though.

Trump got tons of votes on promises of oil which really goes to show how short sighted he and his followers are.

once someone figures out how to make a shit load of money off updating our infrastructure to handle being electric reliant, I think the switch will happen pretty quick.

The money is there to be made. It's just that the fossil fuel industry is, by far, the most profitable industry in human history. The power to influence policy that comes with that wealth is immense, especially in the USA where money influencing politics is basically unlimited.

Hopefully my daughters’ generation will grow up to understand the impact oil and coal have on their planet.

It’s 2025 and boomers are still holding us back lol

My kids and all their friends know this as accepted fact. It's simply not debatable. For them, arguing against human caused climate change would be like arguing against evolution or that the Earth is round.

All good until you have a sweeping vista to the horizon and all you see are solar panels. I have been by the farms around Austin and it's giant eyesore. The only thing wind has ever been useful for is pushing boats and pumping water.
