I Bought a Bass

Anyone have any experience with this pickup?
I'm thinking of just putting one of these in, instead of the dual pickup arrangement.

I'm looking for muddy, not bright. 1 volume 1 tone, as simple as possible.
Also can anyone school me on capacitor values for bass?
Are they different for bass than for guitar?

Not specifically but I was going to suggest an EB pickup. Then you guys started talking about McDonalds hamburgers and shit.

That Artec pickup is cheap, there's also the DiMarzio model 1 which is supposed to kick ass, but it's like $120.
I can afford it, but might be diminishing returns on that pickup. It does sound great in the video reviews i'm watching.

I'll swing by my cousin's house, he's got a bunch of bass amps and said he'd lend me one.
I'll play it for a bit and see what's up.

VB thinks all basses sound better with flats. Can you imagine Yes or Rush or AIC or AC/DC or 85% of every rock and roll song you've ever heard driven by a bass with flats ? Of course you can't, that would be stupid. Blues, Motown, okay..

I played this bass tonight for a good while.
Unplugged
It played great, i think it needs a shim in the neck. Action is a little high, but it still played great with a little higher action.
I'll get to play it tomorrow night through a proper bass amp and see how it sounds.
I want to make it a single pickup, my cousin is trying to talk me out of it.

I love Bartolini pickups. If it were me, I would slap Barts in it and call it a day. Barts are good and round.

My pickups are setup Passive but if I were a "full time" Bass Player, I would probably go "Active" the tonal dynamics are really spectacular through
a dedicated Bass Amp, the punch and bottom end are great but also it depends on the music style,

Someone like Marcus Miller uses Active but a player like Geddy Lee uses for the most part passive. I guess I just didn't want to go through batteries and all that, this Bass originally had Active pickups but I hated the Ibanez brand pickups. Bartolini's are great pickups even passive they sound amazing.

Bartolini pickups are all passive. They make a great preamp too, but I like them passive. You don't need to run them with a preamp.

After measuring the stock pickups at 71mm x 31mm, it looks like the only Bartolinis that would be a mostly direct swap would be these:

And they look great, and i'm sure they sound amazing, but at $200 bucks apiece, that is more than i wanted to spend on this thing.
I'm just not a good enough bassist to justify the expense.
$30 mudbucker from amazon seems more appropriate lol

Not sure what you paid for the bass, but consider selling it and getting an Ibanez for around $500 or less? Local GC may take it on a trade.

I posted a few earlier in this topic, from around $200 to $500, with a few in between.

The Ibanez will likely have a standard pickup configuration that's easier to upgrade if needed.

Most are, but many are not passive bro'.

I think I've even got a pair in an old Cort 5-string fretless.
