I Bought a Bass

Anyone have any experience with this pickup?
I'm thinking of just putting one of these in, instead of the dual pickup arrangement.

I'm looking for muddy, not bright. 1 volume 1 tone, as simple as possible.
Also can anyone school me on capacitor values for bass?
Are they different for bass than for guitar?
Not specifically but I was going to suggest an EB pickup. Then you guys started talking about McDonalds hamburgers and shit. :dunno:

It will sound better if you use flatwounds on it.
I'm keeping whatever strings are on it now.

That Artec pickup is cheap, there's also the DiMarzio model 1 which is supposed to kick ass, but it's like $120.
I can afford it, but might be diminishing returns on that pickup. It does sound great in the video reviews i'm watching.

I'll swing by my cousin's house, he's got a bunch of bass amps and said he'd lend me one.
I'll play it for a bit and see what's up.

VB thinks all basses sound better with flats. Can you imagine Yes or Rush or AIC or AC/DC or 85% of every rock and roll song you've ever heard driven by a bass with flats ? Of course you can't, that would be stupid. Blues, Motown, okay..

I played this bass tonight for a good while.
Unplugged
It played great, i think it needs a shim in the neck. Action is a little high, but it still played great with a little higher action.
I'll get to play it tomorrow night through a proper bass amp and see how it sounds.
I want to make it a single pickup, my cousin is trying to talk me out of it.

I like Bartolini pickups too. I have a guitar with them. Love the way they sound.
Are you guys running them passive? Because i don't want active pickups.
I know Bartolini is known for their active pickups.

My pickups are setup Passive but if I were a "full time" Bass Player, I would probably go "Active" the tonal dynamics are really spectacular through
a dedicated Bass Amp, the punch and bottom end are great but also it depends on the music style,

Someone like Marcus Miller uses Active but a player like Geddy Lee uses for the most part passive. I guess I just didn't want to go through batteries and all that, this Bass originally had Active pickups but I hated the Ibanez brand pickups. Bartolini's are great pickups even passive they sound amazing.

Thank you for the help, i'll def check out what Bartolinis might fit.
I'm def not a full time bass player at all, this is just for dicking around on.

Bartolini pickups are all passive. They make a great preamp too, but I like them passive. You don't need to run them with a preamp.

After measuring the stock pickups at 71mm x 31mm, it looks like the only Bartolinis that would be a mostly direct swap would be these:

And they look great, and i'm sure they sound amazing, but at $200 bucks apiece, that is more than i wanted to spend on this thing.
I'm just not a good enough bassist to justify the expense.
$30 mudbucker from amazon seems more appropriate lol

Not sure what you paid for the bass, but consider selling it and getting an Ibanez for around $500 or less? Local GC may take it on a trade.

I posted a few earlier in this topic, from around $200 to $500, with a few in between.

The Ibanez will likely have a standard pickup configuration that's easier to upgrade if needed.

Yes, this is also a considerable option.
The situation i'm in is a pretty familiar one, as i frequently buy cheap guitars from CL and replace the not so great parts with better quality stuff.
Sometimes i keep them sometimes i give them away. But i always get them playing really well, and pick instruments that have good bones.
There's always the concern about how much $$$ to invest in a cheap instrument.
This the first time i have done this with a bass.
Thus bass plays well enough (in my novice opinion) that it's worth keeping for what i want to do with it.
I was supposed to play it last night through a proper bass amp, but that ended up not working out. New plan is tonight.
The stock pickups may end up sounding ok after all lmao

Most are, but many are not passive bro'.

I think I've even got a pair in an old Cort 5-string fretless.

Agreed 'though; I like the sound/s.
All Bartolini pickups are passive. If you have Bartolini pickups in an active bass, the passive pickups are run into an active preamp. Preamps really thrive with good passive pickups. You can gut any active bass with Bartolini pickups and wire it up passive just by removing the preamp. Some even come with a bypass switch to cut the active preamp out of the circuit to run passive. All Bartolini pickups are passive.

Neural DSP has a bass plugin, Darkglass Ultra that has a free trial if you have an audio interface and studio monitors / headphones.

There are other free or trial bass plugins out there...can let you hear the bass, and dial it in.

Ampeg has one; not sure if they offer a free trial?

Ahh... thanks bro'.

I knew my Cort had a preamp but assumed the PU's were active. My bad.

The stock pickups aren't going anywhere just yet.
They sound good enough for what i'm doing with it.
Played it through a 100w Orange Crush bass amp and it's fine.
Better than i thought it would.
So i'm borrowing a shitty Crate practice amp for the time being and that should also be good enough.
Happily surprised by this one!
Can always swap pickups later if necessary.

Amp i am borrowing is a Crate B-20, these were made from 1986-1989 apparently. Bigger and heavier than what i was thinking for a practice amp but it is made in USA and should fit the bill nicely.
