Noob question: Wiring Suhr Aldrich pups in Les Paul

Oh boy, 4 conductors and a silver ground, I'm so confused lol

I've wired pickups in the past but this one's beyond me. Can anybody help? I don't know how Suhr pairs their wires for starters. The bridge pup I just took out had two wires, easy stuff. These Suhr's have me feeling overwhelmed!

Not looking to coil tap or anything, just want the standard Gibson "master volume" setup like I have now.

Any help would be super appreciated!

Take a look at the wiring diagram I linked above. Black goes to hot, Green gets soldered together with the bare wire to the ground, and the red and white just twist together and tape it. The link above should be a diagram for a LP style guitar

2 hums, 2 vol, 2 tone, 3 way switch.

what are you fuzzy on?

let me see if i can break it down for you...

twist the red and white wires together and solder them to eachother then shrink tube or tape them off.

twist the green and bare wire together and solder that to where the ground from the original pickup was (odds are the back of a pot)

solder the black wire to where the second wire from the original pickup was, either a pot lug or switch depending on the way the guitar was originally wired.

does that help clear it up a bit?

That part for one, thanks Mike! I thought I had to use up all the wires or something.

The other part is figuring out the master volume setup, but I might be able to figure that out.

Two Wires need to be tied off together. ( connecting each coil.) (red and white)
the bare and green need to be soldered to the back of the pot ( bracing plate ground and the grounding of the coils)
and the black is the hot.

if you want master volume, put a switch between the volume pot and the black wire and connect the neck pick up to the other side of the switch.

Thanks for the help guys! I got 'er all figured out except one little thing. When I touch the cover of the neck pickup I get buzzing, almost like I'm removing the ground. I've never run into something like this. Any idea what it could be?

Check the solder joint where the neck pickup's Green and Bare ground (twisted together) are soldered to the back of the pot.

Cool, I'll check it out tonight. The weird thing was that it doesn't buzz unless I touch the cover. Usually when you touch something it creates a ground right? but it seems the opposite in this case. Hopefully a new solder will fix it.

Funny, I was just debating it this morning. Maybe something I'll do down the road, ditch teh master volume setup and open up some options with split coils

Okay, major noob moment, shouldn't be soldering when I'm tired. I reversed the hot and the ground, hence the buzzing when I touched the pickup cover.

I feel like such a nob lol

I learned too when building my cabs, not to work on complicated things when you are tired or frustrated. When you are that way, go for the mindless tasks like dishes.....

Ugh, building cabs when you are tired SUCKS!!! takes sooo much long and the chance of messing something up is HUGE

The wiring diagrams for both splitting one pickup or splitting both are on there. The diagrams are for his solderless kits, but the wires still go to the same components in the diagrams.

I just ordered an Aldrich for the Orville I have on the way and might end up doing this eventually. This thread popping up couldn’t be better timed because I’m fucking clueless when it comes to soldering pickups. It’s amazing how I can understand complex signal chain routing, but I’m a complete fucking moron when it comes to pickups.

Your lp studio should use the shorter shaft pots, but it could use the long shaft pots. That is the key thing to check. If you want to coil split both at the same time, you can just get one pot, if you want to be able to do them individually then you need two push pull pots. I recommend one for each pickup and I like putting them in the tone pot position as you may want to adjust the tone pot a bit when you switch.

That is an example of a pot I think will work assuming you have the short shafts. I did switch the Aldrich pickups to series/parallel switching with the push pull, but I think they sounded better split and in series. Parallel coils as my least favorite of the 3 options.
