I'm on the hunt for a good Mesa 1x12 and it appears that Mesa has brought back the Vintage Thiele to pair with the new Mark IIC+ HRG.

I'm kind of new to these but from my little bit of research it appears the older Thieles were better. I wonder how the new Vintage ones compare with the C90s?

I never knew they did away with the Thieles. I had 2 of them 10 years ago, and they had the MC90's.

As far as I know, the only change from the old ones to newer is just the speaker/cosmetics.

I have a friends at my house now, he has a V30 in it, its really great, they also make a recto 1-12 cab with V30, its bigger and fatter than the theile, I used those for years and they are killer. Sucks that prices on cabs are so high

There are now two versions.

It seems like the only differences are the tolex and metal corner protectors? The more expensive “vintage” version doesn’t even have the EVM?
They bumped the price and you don't even get the EV speaker and yet it's mentioned? what a ripoff.

Here's what they are saying about the Thiele. I guess people complained because the specs were changed from the original ones. They seem to think the C90 is a good era-appropriate replacement for the EV.

Back by popular demand, fat tone’s secret weapon, the 1x12 Vintage Thiele Cabinet. The seen-everywhere companion to Boogie® combos and small heads in the day, this little cabinet set the tone for compact rigs, club to concert arena, throughout the decade of decadence. This compact, ported 1x12 extension—available in black vinyl grille and wicker grille—is the perfect enhancement to our latest “second build” Mark IIC+ or any Mark Series combo or head and open-back cab rig, adding focused fundamental and thumping, gut-punch low end to those exciting sounds.

While initially designed for an Electro-Voice® EVM12L speaker and introduced (under Boogie banners) in the early 80s, the Thiele’s signature sound and relevance are timeless for anyone wanting to add girth and strategic percussive lows regardless of the amp’s origin or stylistic leanings. Now loaded with our era-appropriate proprietary Celestion® C90 speaker, the 1x12 Thiele delivers more than ample low-end punch yet responds with a forgiving, overdrive-friendly voice that adds today’s heavier styles to its originally versatile can-do list.
“While we’re feeling nostalgic, we wanted to bring back one of the iconic 1x12 Boogie cabinets to celebrate the excitement surrounding the IIC+—the Boogie Thiele 1x12 Extension,” says Doug West, Director, Tone Lab, Gibson Amplifiers and MESA/Boogie. “This sealed and ported design became synonymous with huge tone in the ’80s, when players and artists alike discovered it was a secret weapon for delivering massive low end far beyond its physical footprint, along with a tight, punchy overall sound.

We’re excited to offer this mighty little cab once again, now paired with a more forgiving and era-appropriate speaker—our proprietary Celestion C90—to complement the ‘HRG’ IIC+ and other compact Boogie rigs, especially as easy transport becomes increasingly important to players.”

I don’t get it. Both versions use C90s, but one is like $150 more than the other. Weird.

I recently bought the “cheaper” version and it’s great!

I had a Thiele C90 in the early 90’s. Still remember trying to use a small hand truck to take that with a 2555 Silver Jube head, bungy corded on top through Boston streets to get to the recording studios at School. Only when you’re young 🙂

I had the cheaper version, and they're excellent.

It looks like the "appeal" of the more expensive one is that it cosmetically mates to the IIC+. That's messed up.

It seems like the only difference is cosmetic, but I’m not positive. If so, that’s nuts.

Dimensions are the same on both.

Looks like they also discontinued the California Tweed Thiele. That one came loaded with a Jensen Blackbird 40, which sounds downright awful in that cab. The newer Mesa Thiele cabs wont fit an EVM12L without modification to the baffle and grille. I had to modify my Cali Tweed Thiele to install an EV.

"Now loaded with our era-appropriate proprietary Celestion C90 speaker..."

I owned (and foolishly sold) a pair of the OG EV Thieles that I bought in '89 at Andy Brauer's Make'n Music. They were killer - but I had to have the 'look' of a 4x12 in the backline. I have auditioned one with a C90. Still a great cabinet - but not the same experience.

I’ve owned the same cab since 1993. I never got the back panel for the top, but I do have the A&S road-case for it in the garage. It’s the best sounding cab I've ever owned. Love the C90/12L combo.
