I liked the Astro 20. Have you tried the Helios JB45? It seems that would be an amp you might like. Vintage character, tons of variations of Marshall and modded Marshall tones, but can also be dialed in with smoother tones more like the XTC with the "modern switch" on the back.. I had UU, Snorkler and JB 45 simultaneously and the JB45 was my favorite and most useful to me playing mostly 70's and early 80's hard rock. (pre hair metal 80's ).That’s a great amp. I got my eye on that as well.
I gotta watch more videos on the JB 45. That’s an interesting amp. I need a good Marshall style with varying degrees of gain to run my Frank Marino pedals into.I liked the Astro 20. The green channel is a great pedal platform. There are not many videos or clips out there from what I can see. Bxlxaxkxe did a real good demo as did Rappaport but you have probably seen/heard those?I gotta watch more videos on the JB 45. That’s an interesting amp. Since you want something more Marshally but with more gain if needed and a loop, I think those MGL 50 watters might be the animal you are looking for Carl. I'm guessing the MGL should take pedals well but I haven't played one I'm only going by clips and these amps have everything I like about my Marshalls.I gotta watch more videos on the JB 45. Since you have all your plexi needs covered with the Suhr SL67 then the 2204/2203 platform of the MGL would fill the niche you seem to be looking for.
What’s the lowend like on the JB45 , is it tight and clear or more thick and wooly / fuzzy.?I liked the Astro 20. Have you tried the Helios JB45? It seems that would be an amp you might like. It is a vintage voiced amp and has great clarity and lots of voicing options but I would not consider it tight and clear in terms low end chug. think of it like a 2204 in terms of tightness. It will tighten up ok with a boost, but it is a Marshall at heart. Llike a having a jtm 45, and a 2204 and some killer switchable mods that let you dial in a huge range of tones. What’s the lowend like on the JB45 , is it tight and clear or more thick and wooly / fuzzy.?
I’m thinking about it. I haven’t dismissed the Astro 20.One good thing, I have 3 Friedman 1x12s and they sound great with any amp I have used with them.
I currently have a Friedman JEL-20, Little Sister, and a Soldano Astro 20.
I see you have narrowed it down, but if you get a chance to try the Astro 20, it is a great sounding and very versatile amp with 4 footswitchable galaxies/channels.
Sell the Suhr. Friedman Plex in red with the white badge ftwI got the Suhr SL67. Might be too close. A JEL 50 is on the table as well. Especially since it's EL-34's and there is now a bright cap switch on the Gain channel.
After the JEL 20 I don’t think I’d buy another Friedman ampSell the Suhr. Friedman Plex in red with the white badge ftw
Try before you buy.I’m thinking about it. I haven’t dismissed the Astro 20.
For a while there I was all about Friedman amps. After the JEL 20 I don’t think I’d buy another Friedman amp
