I would love to see one voiced for KT66.
Maybe a bit higher PI caps to .047s or .056s and decrease the PI entry cap to .0068 or .0047 to compensate.
Huge, chunky low mids instead of the usual high mid emphasis.
I actually emailed Dave about this not too long ago regarding the new Plex and he confirmed it was just a 250k dual pot with 2.2M safety resistors on the pot. Alpha pot, no PEC, nothing dramatic.
It just works.
Sorry if that's anticlimactic.
Yes, I"m sure the PT are beefier than most Marshalls, but isn't getting a relatively high plate resistance key to getting a higher gain tone?
Or deeper 'distorted' tone?
Was reading up on cathode bias and plate resistance for V1 in Marshall-style amps and the Engl Fireball is frequently mentioned as the amp that takes the distortion channel design to its' Apex.
Supposedly there's a 3.3k/330k value going on that gives it a "fire-breathing" tone.
Well I tried it...
Want to gift as friend who has 78' Silverface Twin, we both came to conclusions there's something special going on with these speakers inside of a Silverface Twin Reverb.
Miiiight consider something equivalent, but haven't heard anything in the 65w range that takes the spot quite like the...
My 79' Les Paul with Super Distortions was once a gainy, hairy and noisy bastard.
I must've resoldered every joint in it and eliminated the ground wire from all 4 pots in a circle to a clockwise pattern onto the ground of input jack.
The real solution was too, shielding the cavity cover and...
Foolish me, but I installed what had believed to be a pristine 10 year old CE Cap Can that has been stored in a dry, cool place for past decade. failed somewhat dramatically 2 days ago.
Installed in my 1968 Traynor YBA1 that I recapped myself with F&T 50/50s across the board, also 10 years ago...
Would greatly help to know the manufacturer of the bridge or at the very least the guitar it came on, otherwise it's a total crapshoot to recommend anything
No it does not look stock.
However, it looks extremely clean and wouldn't be terribly hard to make use of that extra preamp slot for an added gain stage to make it a genuine high gain amp, capable of knocking the socks off of most modern amps. These are extremely easy amps to work on.
Just replaced the filter caps with a CE 80, 40, 30, 20 multi cap can in this 68' YBA-1 primarily to have it all moved away from the input section where installed from factory. I have some high gain mods and I'd like to keep it as noise-free as possible.
I got it all wired up and i realized...
I would love to use an appropriate DC rated pot, but the PEC or similar mil-spec can't be found anywhere these days. None of the pots are rated, really so just have to rely on good bias caps and resistors that haven't burned up or drited. They've all been replaced and are working fine.
That...
Yes, modern EL34s that can tolerate 500+ v on plates are a crapshoot, but hey even more reason to use KT77 which were designed with high plate voltage in mind, they won't even break a sweat
Finally ready to move to a Type 3 to a LarMar Master Volune in my Traynor YBA1. Don't hate the type 3 it does the job admirably without drama, but still somewhat fizzy at low volume, can't help but wonder if I could do better.
I think others have used LarMar on their YBA1 to great effect and I...
I am not, no.
But logic would say that both have similar issues and that "a week or two turn-around" no longer applies in today's extreme high-demand consumer market
