The OCD is a great pedal, but I never found it could be a replacement for the job I use a Tube Screamer for. Very different pedals. Honestly, I find they're almost polar opposites in the overdrive realm. For boosting and tightening a high gain amp, I wouldn't go as far as calling it "muddy"...
I used to have the Randall RD5 combo (which I later had turned into a head) and RD1 head. The RD1 was far better at low volumes. The RD5 was pretty fizzy until you got it cranking, and by that time, it wasn't all that bedroom friendly. Not LOUD, but louder than TV levels for sure. Honestly, the...
I had one. While I never really got to "open it up" (the reason why I sold it), it did sound good. It wasn't exactly the "tone in my head", but I paid like $350 for it. For that kind of money, I have a hard time thinking of anything that even comes close.
Nate from the old ESP forum did a bunch...

Once they throw the Tube Screamer on, it doesn't sound like it's lacking clarity. Of course it's got that Orange dense, dirty voicing to the mids, but then again, isn't the OP looking for "something different"?
I think the Rockerverb series can get pretty heavy. Throw the boost of your choice in front (like you would with almost any other amp), and it becomes an instant djent machine if you're into that sort of thing. They always have this kinda dense dirty grind to them, though. That is what I feel...
I'm sure Jari loves his twang too. He, after all, did use a Tele to record one of Wintersun's albums, didn't he?
And yeah, I definitely hear that in Ola's tone as well. I'm sure that has A LOT of things adding up, though, not just the Evertune. The guitars are 25.5" with alder bodies. Ola also...
FWIW, I think the Duncan Black Winter has a similar upper-mid grind compared to the JB grind with less stuffy lower mids and a bolder, leaner, faster bottom-end.
Yep. All Celestions. Not copies. Just other tweaks on the V30 formula (H magnet, 444 cone, 60-ish W power handling, etc.) by Celestion.
The Relic 30's I have sounds like Celestion's take on the "V30 minus the upper mid spike" thing. They're REALLY dark, IMO. Darker than the Mesa version...
Oh, there's more. There's the Blackstar tweaked version that they have on the Series One Pro 4x12 cabs and the Bad Cat propietary speaker. They also had the G12-60 which MojoTone used to claim was a tweaked V30 as well.
I have a couple of 16 ohm Celestion Relic 30's which I believe are just...
Cool vid, though I must admit I wasn't a big fan of the tone he dialed in. A bit twangy for my taste. I thought the EMG 57 sounded the least twangy, though. So that one was my favorite.
I love the Black Winter, but it's definitely not a fat-sounding pickup. It's not as thin as an EMG 81 or a Dimebucker can be, but it leans more towards tight, focused, and cutting.
I actually have an MXR Classic Overdrive. I dig the GT-OD mode, but I didn't think to A/B the ZW mode with the SD-1. Will do! The MXR seems to have more bass overall, though, doesn it?
Anyone have experience with this pedal?
I have a standard run-off-the-mill SD-1 that I really like to boost my Marshall. I wish it had a little bit more output volume, though. My TS808 is a tiny bit louder with the level maxed if I listen to it in front of a clean channel. With hot pickups, I...
Gotcha, thanks.
I already have a Dimebucker in one of my guitars that I'm not really enjoying. I asked about the Distortion and the Dimebucker because that's what I have experience with to use as a point of comparison.
Yeah, the Crunch Lab is a good pickup to warm up a bright-sounding guitar...
What did you not like about the X2N? I've been curious about trying one. Any chance you could compare it to the Duncan Distortion, Black Winter, or Dimebucker?
I've always been under the impression the X2N is more bright and cutting rather than fat, but then again, I have no first-hand...
