Who feels they found some sweet gear in 2013

All I bought in 2013 were strings and picks. 2010-2012 were the big years for me with each piece of the puzzle finally getting me closer to the sound I wanted. This year was the year for me to reap the rewards.

    Coming back full circle

I switch it up a lot between a Recto and a Mark, not sure why but both seem to have whatever it is that I subconsciously look for even though they do it in totally different ways. The Stiletto didn't have "it", although for some reason the Electra-Dyne does. I have no idea what "it" is...

    Coming back full circle

I've tried branching out but I keep coming back to Mesa. I think it's because my first tube amp was a Recto, so when I play through something like a Marshall it sounds great at first, but the feel is all wrong and once I expand beyond playing AC/DC I start to notice things that are missing...

Guilty pleasures when it comes to known guitarists?

Kurt Cobain. He's not really a guilty pleasure since I'm not ashamed to admit I like him... But he fits the rest of your criteria.

WHATS THE BEST DISTORTION YOU'VE EVER HEARD? Metallica

Although I hate Nickleback I can't fault their guitar tones.

Surprised that a V30 and T75 combo sounds scooped...

You'll have to ask (the Hollywood Store). I know you can order direct from Mesa, but if you can I recommend playing through a Recto cab first so you can hear what I'm talking about and decide whether it's for you or not.

Surprised that a V30 and T75 combo sounds scooped...

Regular (non-Mesa) V30s tend to sound bright, thin and have a big hole in the lower mids when combined with a Recto, which is where most of the Rectos midrange presence sits. The sound es further exaggerated by the general nature of the G12T-75. When I tried both those setups (4xV30 and then a...

    New Mesa Amp - Recto-Verb 25

I wonder what the deal is with the Fillmore FM75 speaker they used for it? I know that Fillmore is Boogies house speaker brand, but I wonder why they went with it instead of the standard V30 and how they differ from each other?

THe new Korn album is awesome

I checked it out. I found it fairly generic sounding rock. Most of the groves were straight up rock beats with the bass mixed way low for a Korn album (ie, mixed like a standard rock bass). For the most part it had the standard Korn sound, albeit weak and thinned out. I felt the album lacked the...

What electric guitar picks are you using, what string gauge?

Been using the green .88s for a number of years now. Sometimes I use the purple 1.14s when I want a more mellow attack. I used to be a big fan of Jazz IIIs, and I think they made me a better player... But I find them too smooth with not enough attack. Although I can see why someone who...

In need of a little help...

IMO, no. Pre/power amp set ups are going the way of the dodo bird, and if it weren't for the Axe FX guys trying to use their box like it was a real guitar amp I don't think there'd be any interest in tube power amps any more (Mesa's discontinued all of theirs except one). A good multi-channel...

    Fulltone Full-Drive 2, great pedal !!

It has a flat mids mode and a boosted mids mode. Does it feel like an extension of the amp or does it thicken it? It depends on what guitar and amp you're using.

How NOT to make a Mesa Mark sound good.

Seeing his settings makes me realize why so many Marshall guys hate Mesas.

Mesa Single Rectifier: EL34 vs. 6L6 - Your choice & brand?

6L6s. I've switched back and forth a few times and I prefer 6L6s. Bigger, bolder and more dynamic. EL34s do have more upper mids and compression, which you'd think would make them better for soloing, but I find they recess single notes while 6L6s make them pop more.

Which gear have you changed your mind about?

G12T-75s I still hate standing in front of them but I like the way they sound through a mic. Mesa MC-90 I hate the way they sound by themselves but like the way they sit with a band. Overdrive pedals I hated the way they made an amp sound and they felt terrible to play through, then I used...

Do you have an amp that ended your quest for tone?

Recto + Mark. My first two tube amps were a Recto and a Mark III. Sold them to try new things and after a few years I wound up with a Roadster and a Mark V. I don't know what it is about those two amps but despite being different there's something in their voice and feel that just seems right...
