So what guitar player do you really like that isn't necessarily a virtuoso, and doesn't really even play your main/favorite genre of music?

I'll start with one of my favorites which is Billy Duffy from The Cult. I think he looks super cool on stage, and his style is really catchy IMO. I also really dig Tommy Victor from Prong. Though I do play a somewhat similar style of music to him, so I don't know if he technically counts. His name however doesn't normally come up in "guitar circles," so that's why I'm listing him anyway. I'll think of more prolly, but those two popped in my head first.

Kurt Cobain.

He's not really a guilty pleasure since I'm not ashamed to admit I like him... But he fits the rest of your criteria.

Yeah I guess my thread title is misleading, but I was basically hoping peeps would post names of players that aren't ones that would normally come up in a "100 greatest guitarists of all time" type of article. So yeah, KC fits that bill just fine. To me he was a songwriter first and a guitarist a distant second, which in my book is the most important part of doing music anyway.

Keith Scott. Guitarist for Bryan Adams. Extremely tasteful player.....

Lotsa people can't stand him, but to me he's an incredible player - John Frusciante.

James Williamson.....................................and agreed ^^^

edit for agreeing

Prince.

I love that dude. I think he's a great guitarist, and I know a lot of people will laugh.

It's ok. He's great.

Not really a guilty pleasure since I openly admit that I like the Smiths, but Johnny Marr always had that really cool jangly tone and cool riffs that worked so well in the context of the songs.

Great songwriter too! I don't really like many of the songs he's written, but he's written tons of hit songs, and many of them for other peeps.

Ace Frehley, especially on Kiss Alive....nothing to say to say 'wow what an innovative player' ...but it's still awesome.

+1

Don't laugh... Christopher Cross. The dude can shred. And I read somewhere that he is a gear head as well.

Only 2 I can think of right now.
