    "Bogner blanket"

Exactly Bro. Reinhold's idea when designing 101B was to rework classic 1959 putting as much "darkness" to it as it was possible. That is why he put audio Treble pot, C40 and lowered 2nd gain stage to 2.38K. And done much more tweaks darkening the tone... Totally. Those two mods are essential...

    "Bogner blanket"

The point here is logarhytmic (audio) dirty Treble pot and C40 Excursion cap. Log Audio pot darkens the tone as in halfway it makes the 10% resistance of linear one, then the resistance increases dramatically, becoming actually "Sizzle" control. See here: http://www.geofex.com/Article_Folders/p...

    Went for a brighter tone

Even without modding I couldn't make the amp usable with Presence lower than 2:30 o'clock. After the mods, it is 12:30 :)

    XTC C40 mod clips

Heh, in fact I was quite sceptical about modding XTC. I spent long hours on discussing with Marvel about reasonableness of all that. But we decided to tweak it as the circuit is designed almost perfectly. Not mentioning that the amp is manufactured the way that is unattainable for most of the...

    XTC C40 mod clips

In short on-off clip first sound is with the cap and second without it, with aprox. 170k resistance in nfb circuit in all clips. Regards, Andy :)

    XTC C40 mod clips

In 20th Ann Shiva You got an Excursion knob on the back of the amp. But I don't know if it works similar to Depth control in previous Shivas, where You have 1M log pot paralleled by 2n2 cap. Changing pot to linear and removing the cap makes the Depth control working exactly the same way as in my...

    XTC C40 mod clips

    Hi! I did some short clips to illustrate how the mod changes the sound. C40 on - https://www.soundclick.com/player/single ... 62321&q=hi C40 off - https://www.soundclick.com/player/single ... 62326&q=hi C40 on-off - https://www.soundclick.com/player/single ... 62328&q=hi As these are mp3...

Still love my Bogner 101b halfstack and still love this vid

If You feel so, the C40 mod is definitely the one to do. After removing the cap the amp starts to breath. C40 cap to my ears removes too much highs and "squishes" the poweramp's tone. I really regret that I haven't started modding my amp with removal of that cap. Maybe I wouldn't have to dig in...

    Power Tube for 101b

Well, as for the JJ's the fact is that many companies use them as they can get it fairly cheap in a big amounts. The quality of JJ tubes are controversial. Obviously tubes aren't under warranty so if it fails You got to replace it indyvidually. Manufacturer is happy 'cause You have bought his...

    Thinking about a bogner

I'm very curious of how Classic sounds, but yes, it could sound less meatier compared to 101B, as there's much less compression and less filtering. But it incorporates classic Marshall preamp circuit. Maybe removal of C40 cap would make it meatier and more aggressive :). Regads, Andy :)

    Thinking about a bogner

Classic and 100B main filtering is less stiff, more dynamic and more headroom. They contain lower caps values than 101B. Unfortunately I couldn't hunt down the exact values in 20th Ann and Classic. As You have 20th You might check the big filters and post the values :). Regards, Andy :)

    Thinking about a bogner

Different amps actually, You might dig thru YT and listen to clips of both amps. Classic is dryer sounding version of 101B, much less compressed, so with Marvel Mod it should work great. 20th Ann is widely reworked amp, the circuit idea is much different, and so is the voicing. One more thing...

    New 101b on the way!

Actually Treble and Bass tapers are audio, Middle and Presences are linear. That is why it's hard to balance highs and mids, because till 1-2 o' clock Treble seems hardly to be effective. The point is also that Presence tapers in XTC are 25K, what makes them less effective too. In JMP Presence...

    New 101b on the way!

That's the point when it comes to XTC. In SOME bands it is very hard to cut thru. The famous "blanket effect" killed many people's good attitude to that great amp. That was my problem, but I managed to fix it modding the amp. Basically two small mods solve the whole problem. I digged deeper...

    Power Tube for 101b

Surely preamp tubes are more important for shaping the sound. But one of the biggest surprises for me was how much powertubes affect XTC's tone. It wasn't so important in my previous Marshalls. In XTC every powertube I tried sounded noticeably different, with =C='s and NOS Tesla's being the most...
