Amen to OP. I'll take it a step further........there were a ton of unknown NWOBHM bands that never got their due. I hated the whole RATT, Dokken, Crüe, etc scene because it killed a lot of those bands.
Different strokes. He asked for opinions and I gave him mine........only because I know (if memory serves correct) that he likes the Pitbull CL. Of the amps you mentioned, I have owned 12 of them. I stick to my opinion on the EVH 50.
Not trying to talk you out of it.........but if I remember correctly from the old HCAF days, you are a big fan of the VHT/Fryette Pitbull CL. I am as well. I actually have a VHT and a Fryette version of the 50/CL (both without EQ). The Fryette is the new tweaked version. I owned the EVH 50w for...
I didn't have a problem with the low end at low volumes......through a 2x12 and 4x12. My problem after awhile was how "toyish" and synthetic the gain was. Also started sounding really nasal to my ears after a few weeks as well. It's a strange amp.......sounds amazing at first and is so fun to...
I don't find the BM75's bright/upper middy at all. Matter of fact, I went from a V30/G12H30 mix in one of my 4x12's to a BM75/H75 mix and then eventually to a BM75/G12H30 mix (didn't like the H75). Now the cab is darker and smoother. I can't stand H30's on their own.......scooped and harsh on...
Wouldn't call it my fave.........but I do love it. Its really unique and fits the songs perfectly. There's some heavy reverb and chorus on most of the tracks. I think that's G12T-75 speakers as well.
A couple of my faves off the top of my head:
Mercyful Fate - Into The Unknown
Accept - Balls...
Surprised the 50w is getting so much praise here. Mine seemed cool at first just because the saturation made it so easy to play. But after awhile the distortion seemed really toyish.........like a cheap distortion pedal. This was most evident when playing for awhile and then plugging into...
Couldn't agree more. I had a pair of Heritage GB's and 6 Creambacks not too long ago. Neither had the mids at loud volumes to give a crunchy "edge". They just flattened out and got compressed really fast. I use 50 watt amps and I don't have that problem with the GB Reissues.
I've had just about every pup mentioned here in a couple of LP's. For what you describe, I would recommend a BG Bucker Dark. The BBQ is warm/thick, but can get a bit muddy IMO. The Detroiter and Duncan Custom aren't going to help your brightness issue. Everything else mentioned here is not...
I recommend the BG Bucker Dark. It does everything you described in OP. Matter of fact, I have a Rebel Yell, Detroiter, and Godwood in my parts drawer collecting dust. Along with a bunch of other pups.
Fryette/VHT Pitbull CL in class A mode with a pure clean boost in front. I've owned a ton of amps and this is still yet to be topped for high gain metal.
