I am lost with too many choices on the Torpedo and the cabs all sound so different, so I did this recording for myself actually as reference, so I thought why not share it.

Recording is PRS McCarty with a BareKnuckle RiffRaff Bridge, straight into the HBE input on the Friedman BE100, then Torpedo Live into DAW. All settings the same. In Logic added Reverb on the guitar track and a bit of Limiting on the Master. I kept the volume of the guitar track the same, all tracks have been normalised so the theoretical volume is the same on all, perceived volume differs a lot between them IMO.

Which do you like? (inlc. maybe some feeback like that cab is best but more mids on the amp etc)

I don't know if my vote can count but to me the 2x12 Marshall Jubilee win this one. ;) Followed by the CAA.

It surely counts Guillaume, even though you're French

I liked the Redwirez Tryout best with the CAA as a close second. The V30's and especially the Sheffields were very scooped, Eminence has a strange sizzle. Greenback cab lacks lows and highs and the Redwirez 1968 is very strange sounding to me.

What is Torpedo anyway, one of those cab-impulse programs ?

TwoNotes Torpedo Live is a reactive loadbox with integrated speaker sim. Basically you plug your 100W amp in, crank it, and then choose between cabs/mics, and their positioning in the virtual engine. The supplied Cabs and ones available from TwoNotes all have the mic choice and positioning, whereas if you load other IRs, you have only one setting per cab. It's pretty cool for home, studio or live actually. Especially as you can leave the loop of the amp alone and add your FX after the cab sim and go straight to the desk.

I like the Slash cab. Use it with my setup all the time!
Sounds great as does most of the Torpedo stuff.

Such a great tool to have!

:)

bump for some more votes. seems everyone likes something else ...

I really liked the CAE 4x12 Greenback Clones "RackHero" it was very clear

Being french should give me 2 votes. Minimum. :D

The variety of answers is very interesting by the way, we will see if we get enough votes to see a tendency for one or another cabinet.

Yeah it's funny, isn't it? Probably depends also on what people are listening, laptop speakers vs monitors, headphones, iphone speakers. But the cabs make such a huge difference, it's amazing. I stopped thinking about cabs when I got my '73 Marshall straight, that was the end for me. Unless I got the "Live"...

I think it would be even more fun if we repeat the same exercise in the future double blind ie new files that are just numbered and only identified as speaker A, speaker B etc so we can't cheer for our favorite.

I thought the Jubilee sounded closest to the original recording but went for the Hemp Cone for my choice.

We don't know what the mic choices were which is cool...one advantage of a darker speaker (like the Hemp Cone) is that some of the brighter mics really get a chance to do their best work. This concept is a whole chapter in Michae Stavrou's "Mixing With Your Mind" which is my favorite book on the subject.

These clips have me super excited! I have a Torpedo Live on the way to use with my Quick Rod.

That's cool. Makes playing at home a breeze. Which cab did you like most? Seems there is a slight tendency towards RackHero and my blended Tryout1. But each sound seems to find people who like it?

Man, they all sound good.....I think I like the Slash 4x12 and the Redwirez ones the best.

Are all of these examples IR models?

I likes the V30 Forest and the Can abyss

Yes all of them are IR based. The TwoNotes supplied cabs have a more complex system where you can modify the IRs by choosing the mic and the positioning. They achieve that with multiple recordings of the same cab and then interpolate or something. The IRs that were loaded in (3 last ones) are "static" IRs meaning you have just the one mic/position of the original file. Doesn't mean that the outcome is less complex, just less flexible.

The thing I found with the LIVE is that you can't just pick a cab. You have to try a cab with each mic. Then mic position. Cabs I tried that I thought I would never use - until I tried it with a different mic - and then it was, "oh, I get it". Also, obviously, what style of music you try through that combo.

For me, I tried a lot of different combos trying to get my favorite type tone. Once I nailed that everything else fell into place.

The thing that is the most frustrating to me is I haven't been able to ditch the amp. I have been using pedals (PedalPro) into a clean amp (Hiwatt/SLO). The Live emulates the power section but not the pre. So, I just can't dial it in without the real amp - even using the LIVE's power amp emulation. It would be nice to have a clean preamp sim. I mean not having one is sort of like not having a mic sim with the cab sims. They go hand and hand. I guess this would apply more to the C.A.B. pedal, but would still be cool in the LIVE.

Still the LIVE and PedalPro are the 2 best purchases I've made in the last 2 years.

Just got back from my first practice since I tore my Achille's, and ran direct with the LIVE and it was beyond great. :)

I think I liked the RackHero the best. Which is funny because I didn't like it with my gear. I liked the last 5 the least, especially the Hemp.
