Including my actual vintage Lesters?

...meh, it's all relative :D

This is such a sobering thread.

I never really think of my gear as a whole, but as individual pieces, so I had to sit down & make an actual list of all the guitar, amps & pedals.

Well, I have almost 50 guitars with an average price tag of at least $2500 each, countless pedals, AXE8 & 5 amps, 3 of which were custom built for me, so I'd say I'm in it for almost $200,000

Mind you, I have no hobbies, hate sports, don't care about fancy clothes or fine dining & don't drink or do drugs etc.

All I have ever cared about since I was 16 is guitars, guitars & more guitars.

Guitars at the moment is probably sitting around £1500
Amps sitting around £1700
Studio gear probably £1500 including PC

So about 5k in US $$$

I spend most of my time hanging out with all my gear so I see it as a very good value for money investment.

I thought that I was alone. I have likely $50k in gear.

Well first off --- good money on insurance, security system/cameras/off site storage, guns and ammo ;)

I'm a cheap SOB and buy most of my high end stuff used (can't see paying 6k for a guitar new when I can get under 3 used) so I can either break even or make profits on what I currently own. Quick tally is roughly 50k on amps, cabs and guitars. Few thousand in recording/effects, few thousand in parts (bodies, necks, pickups, floyds, could probably piece 6-8 more guitars together)

thinking $40K at this point but I also have a full PA for my band because we gig and a full blown protools studio and I just added a wizard MTL to the stash

My number would be a lot less if not for a few vintage pieces I have had forever.
I have not bought a pedal in 2 years. I have not bought a amp since 2008. I have not bought a guitar since the 90's.
I check out just about everything that comes out and prefer what I have. I rarely get GAS. If I do it is usually for something I have not tried. As soon as I try something I realise I like what I have better.
I might pick up a few overdrive pedals and maybe a Tele.... Anything else would be particular for a gig.

It's a big # I have invested/spent on gear. Few regrets, though!

You, sir, are my hero!!!

Stopped counting after around 50 grand. So maybe...60. But that's it dammit.

I knew there would be guys who have an exponential amount invested compared to me. In some sort of subconscious way I knew this would make me feel better about spending the money. Guess what? It worked! Looks like a new amp is on the way. I don't know how you rationalize your purchases, but apparently this is how I do it.

Getting it for cheaper than I anticipated, so that's an extra bonus.

I have been playing 46 years.... It averages out to about two dollars a day I spent on gear. Not to mention my gear is worth a lot more than I paid for it.

Any 59 Les Pauls or 54 Strats?

..and I thought I was nuts at about $10k (used value).....way too much for someone who gets to play maybe a couple of hours a month.

Number would be a lot higher if I did. I did own a early 50's LP Gold Top a long time ago. I do have a few Fenders from the 60"s.

I've been looking for a '68 Strat with all original parts for years to no avail.

Saw a few counterfeits & a few with too many newer parts, but nothing original.

You'd think Norman's Rare Guitars would be able to source one, but nope.

Oh you are nuts   , $10k is real $. Again in my effort to rationalize, there are clearly people out there that have made a bigger commitment to this hobby so-to-speak than you or I.

The thing that gets me the most is I know there is more gear in my future. I could live with $10k if it would last my lifetime, but I know it won't. I might not buy something again for a year or 2, but that is about my historical limit before I want something new. In my younger years I would just sell something after the new toy was bought. I no longer like doing that, so the gear will likely pile up.

I will say though, I have the most control over my GAS now than ever before. It takes a lot for me to spend the money. The latest and greatest "forum hit" typically doesn't inspire me. As an example, I still haven't bought-in to the Friedman stuff. Based on the posts I'm sure it's phenomenal gear, I just haven't been moved check them out. Maybe in 2-5 years when I'm contemplating my next purchase that will bump me into the $15k range it will be because of some badass Friedman amp.

$10K really ain't much if you think about it. A good amp and a few good guitars and you're there.
