I probably would too if I knew what I was doing. That said, I’m getting addicted to the mid texture the right boost can add to an amp (in addition to the extra gain and tight low end). I almost prefer an amp that needs a boost these days
Honestly an amp that needs a boost and is boosted retains the big character and gains out great while staying dynamic.

Amps that are modded in typical manners to have no boosts typically tend to sound thin and lose dynamics.

I believe I prefer a IIB+ boosted over a IIC+

Say what you want. But that’s what a cranked 2204 sounds like with no boost and no processing. It gets wild and tubby.
Yep. Pretty much what my JCM800 sounds like before pulling out some 700hz in post production and adding some reverb.

Sounds fucking amazing to me!!!!
Stock amp!!! No boost!!!!

I have the same amp, but an 85'. Sounds exactly like that!!!

Jacob rocks hard man

Great players but an 800 opened up wide is a flabby mess and that flub is coming through in this clip. The secret is the MV set high and the preamp dialed back to tighten it right up. Also, a lot of the dudes he was playing were using a subtle boost from an echo plex in line ( jabs) or tightening the front end with distortion boxes or eq's. ( randy) Deraps just refuses to use any pedals.

Now that said, awesome awesome player. Really digs in and works for the gain he gets out of his amps. I like some of his original stuff too even if it is heavily VH based. I'd love to see a show of his if he would gig in other places than MTL region/ Quebec.

I never run the master above 7 or 8 on my JCM800.

Nothing gets better above 8.

ymmv

I'd also like to add that if you set an 800 thr way I just said and then push the eq controls to 10 or to taste including the presence, it does the Plexi or angry Superlead thing very well. That preamp absolutely has to come down..it starts acting as if you jumped and pumped Vol 1 and 2 on a Plexi and that's gonna sound like shit too.

Exactly. A heavily modded amp has no where left to go, and when the gain is backed off usually doesn’t sound that great. Thats why I have only ? 6 ODs currently on my board. Each one makes the amp sound different. And when they’re off, I get that old school mid gain crunch back.

Jacob is an unbelievable player and his clips like that tend to be really raw meaning he just plugs straight into the amp and let's it rip. It appears he really doesn't do much in post production .

I dig the raw/live sound.

You can nit pick aspects of the tone, but the overall sound & feel are spot on.

I’m more impressed with his ability to play that cleanly with a cranked amp and so little gain without anything in front of it pedal wise than I am about the tone he’s copping.

Honestly it sounds very peavey 5150 like. I guess I just prefer modded Marshall’s or boosted ones over stock.
exactly... you can see he has total control of his licks. does not look forced. and the lack of gain and still nailing those riffs. dude is pretty damn good.

Even Mr. Lynch uses.used the ole OD boost pedal up front. The clip sound decent but if he backed it down and boosted it the dynamics would be better IMHO.

There are alot of clips on YT where Lynch was trying to run straight into a 68 plexi/old Superleads and even with his fretboard attack the tone was less than stellar missing that little bit of push that the overdrive provides.
