200-Yard Shot

Well, you proved me wrong. I always imagined that 200 yards would be difficult, as I can visualize 2 football fields distance. I know pretty much nothing about rifle shooting, and my only experience was with a pistol. Which reminds me, I need to get that Beretta back, eventually.

No worries dude :)

When I first started shooting, I thought, "Wowwwww hitting a dinner plate a football field away is crazy!" Then after doing it, I was like, "Wooowwww hitting a dinner plate TWO football fields aways is crazy!" And so on.

Now I'm like... "Meh, hitting a 1/4-inch dot at 300 yards is boring" and "Hitting a 1-minute target on the first round at 1,000 is easy". It's all relative.

The general rule of thumb for long-range precision shooting is you should spend as much for the optic as you did for the gun (if not more). Guns can come and go, but optics are the real investment.

Long range shooting is fun, and kind of zen. But it's gotten a bit boring for me. I mostly do sporting clays these days, which is much more fun.
I'm a shotgun junkie. I grew up on quail and woodcock. These days it's mostly high capacity autos, courses and our own homegrown 3 gun shit.

When I fired a gun for the first time, I was really afraid of the shells hitting me in the eye. My ears are also extremely sensitive and it's good thing I had earmuffs on. But I quickly discovered it was not so easy to hit my target even at just 15 yards away. Is this normal to feel this way with a pistol? My teacher pointed out that if you pay attention in movies, you'll notice they never run out of ammo.

Normal to feel how ? Without knowing and practicing basic shooting fundamentals hitting your target, even at 15 yards, can be challenging. I zero carry guns at 15 yards, but it can't be stressed enough that training for CC should involve a good amount of "Point shooting". That is shooting without using sights. Some people are naturals, but almost anyone can be proficient at it if they put in the work.

I guess I meant that I struggled to hit the bullseye and most of my shots were missing it by about 6-12 inches.

I could have you shooting bulls pretty quickly. Basic shooting fundamentals are fairly simple. The one that gets most people is trigger control. That is executing your trigger press without moving the gun off target.

If I'm guessing you were missing low and left. That's most common. Jerking the trigger anticipating recoil will do that.

Yes, I was missing low and left. haha
A good thing to work out trigger control. Rack your EMPTY pistol. Put a spent shell casing on the front sight. Grip it properly, acquire your sight picture and squeeze the trigger without the spent casing falling off. Are you still on target ? A lot of it is also taking up the slack and resetting the sear. When you start your trigger press, press until you feel all the takeup out and you hit the "Wall". When you are on the wall that's when you correct your sight picture, breathe and squeeze. There are exercises to break the habit of anticipating recoil too. Mix in snap caps with live rounds in your magazine ideally having someone else load it so you don't know when you will have a live round or a snap cap.

Anyway, any good instructor can set you straight pretty quickly.

Yes. But also rifles are vastly more accurate and easier to shoot consistently compared to pistols.

For a civilian other than the range or hunting there's nothing you can do with fancy firearms unless you're a criminal.

That's patently false. And if you can't think of another reason or at least four others, then I urge you to STFU. You're a military vet of some kind? Shameful. Also, this thread isn't about politics or the 2A or what you deem right or wrong with regard to gun control. So go somewhere else and argue about that nonsense.

Or post your cannons on guitar forums LOL.
Yeah i earned my stripes while you were in diapers.

I can see things have really changed. What did i disrupt your "fantasy sniper" concept in your head ?
Go Fuck yerself dickhead. Someone had to save the planet while you were shitting your Gerbers in your pants.
You don't have what it takes. Whats it say on your DD-214 ? Oh you don't have one.
What you want a pat on the back cuz you hit a paper target that doesn't shoot back ?
500 to 1000yds is basic rifleman qualifications. How could you possibly miss 200 with your setup.
You ain't right Bro.

It’s amazing to me the clowns on here that will knowingly keep arguing “ I’m right, you’re wrong” bullshit🤡

It’s all fundamentals
If you have the fundamental skills to shoot a half inch five shot group at a hundred yards 3 times in a row, you can shoot out to 1000 yards. The wind is the biggest variable. If it’s consistent wind, you can run those numbers.
Gusty wind is harder to calculate. Wind in different directions on really long shots is even harder, but if you take some time to nail down those fundamentals you can certainly do it. I’ve done long distance precision for almost 2 decades, but I knew early on that I had some fundamental weak spots so we went up to K&M and spent some time with those guys and found out nearly everything I was doing was wrong 😂😂
Once we got the kinks out and started doing it properly we were rolling. Before the day was over we were hitting an 8” steel plate at 1000 yards at will. It’s not magic voodoo.
You develop and verify your numbers and stick to what is the most consistently repeatable so the main variables are the wind calls.
4Tand 6 is correct, after a bit it can become boring so we work on changing up the stages so that the shot becomes the easy part, setting up the weapon in a difficult situation on a timer becomes the hard part and keeps it interesting.
We have one stage that is on a platform suspended by chains to replicate the movement of a boat, and that one at 700 yds is always tuff for me. I’ve never done well on that thing, but if I’m doing well on other stages I always go over and give it a go..
Just keeps it fun
It may take a dozen misses to land 1 shot.
Your buddies can move the platform in any direction, so just when you figure out one direction they will most certainly change it on you and whatever you figured out the last time means very little .
That thing fing drives me batshit crazy but it’s fun 😂😂
But yeah, stationary prone with few variables does get boring unless something changed on you that your unaware of and you have to figure out why your missing those shots..
200 yards with an -06 that has a properly zeroed scope would have been easy aside from the adrenaline the kid would have had to deal with within that situation.

Awwwwww
Did you get called out again for talking shit Jabba?
Your ex military and you don’t know the correct distance for qualifying?
No.. No you don’t 😂
You better stick to cutting up ham hocks fat boy, just because you spent time on a boat in the Navy does not at all mean you know how to shoot. You just proved you were full of shit again…
You’d think you would learn after the 1000 other times it’s happened to you
😂😂
