2204 Overloading a 100 watt Greenback Cab or…?

Tubes are biased at approx 36mA btw, so if anything maybe a wee bit hot. I know somebody mentioned a cold bias could be an issue with funky noise earlier.

Although i am listening on my phone, I don't hear any major farting noise. I kind of hear a little sizzle at very bottom? Did you try tapping on all the pre amp tubes with a pencil? Maybe one of them is about to go microphonic possibly?
I would replace all tubes and then if still there, take to tech to check caps and tranny. Also ensure tube sockets are clean......no dust

I would have had to play something different to fart out on that Mesa OS cab, which I didn't do because I started focusing more on the weird staticky/sizzly sounds I was starting to hear. I've already swapped out preamp tubes and cleaned jacks and that sort of thing. If its the power tubes I won't be able to determine that until I get the ones I just ordered in. I've worn out power tubes before and yeah they start to get loose and cloudy sounding, but I've never had bad power tubes give me this almost oscillating static kind of sound.

I have had oscillating static and ocean sounds from bad tubes. My fingers are crossed for you that it is your power tubes. Good luck. Will be checking in to see the conclusion!

Are you used to high gain amps cause 2204 is not. Sounds like a marshall non boosted chords being played to me

I can hear it but I'm sure that's because I've heard that before. It's like a slight buzzing sound as the note fades out. On a palm mute you can choke out the notes easily like not enough juice is making it through. From your clip I would eliminate the cab as the issue. To me it's either power tubes which I doubt or its the tranny or like component. It's an internal vibration. A good tech will be able to tell with some quick measurements.

lol jesus the clip was not boosted on purpose because I was trying to see if I could still hear the weird shit with less gain and no pedals activated, trying to remove variables. It is actually worse with any of my OD’s engaged, not better. With more gain I have to drop the bass knob almost down to zero even with the MXR CBMOD up front in the standard mode which is basically an SD-1.

I’ve had a few Marshalls before, this isn’t my first one. My first 800 to own but not to have played extensively. The amp is not completely fucked or something, but there is something up. I think wither power tubes or maybe filter caps.

One thing for certain is it isn’t my cabs. I moved some shit around and hooked up my Deliverance to the Greenback cab and it was not farting out. I’m sure I COULD get them to fart out with that amp but I’d have to try to.

Some bad tranny symptoms-
  • The amp powers up but makes weird noises likes squeals, oscillation, static or motor boating.
  • The amp powers up but the guitar audio sounds weak, bad or drops out completely.
  • The amp has excessive hum or buzz.

Yep that’s exactly right, there’s a buzzing/static sound in the top end. On certain palm mutes it chokes out but with an abrupt fart kind of sound for lack of a better descriptor.

I’ll record a quick clip later of the palm mutes. Then everyone will stop doubting or saying that’s just how a Marshall sounds

I hope the Drakes are not toast.

Another thing is there is less obvious noise if I plug into the low sensitivity input, but I can still hear that buzzing/staticky sound in the note decay.

Sounds like a mismatched OT impedance.

Is the OT hot to the touch? As in you can’t keep your hand on it?

Have you tried to replace and rebias a known good set of power tubes? Have you tried pulling two outter tubes and halving the impedance? Do the same again with the two inner tubes pulled with half the impedance?

I’ve heard that before and it sounds like an impedance mismatch to a cab. Not pleasant at all. I hear what you’re talking about.

did you change preamp tubes and yeah I have heard my share of shitty marshalls

Thanks for the info, I’ll will check that about the OT later tonight. That would be bad.

It’s a 2204 not a 2203 so I only have the one pair of tubes. I can’t try a new pair until I get the ones I ordered from Nesstone, which will probably be a few days or so.

Ahh my bad, forgot while I was replying. Then obviously ignore pulling tubes to test - you’ll need to retube and see if it follows the tubes.

Yes, that would be bad. Heyboer makes excellent replacements so not a game changer but you’ll need to figure out what the problem is first.

Alright, so output tranny is cool as a cucumber.

I decided to plug up to my 2x12 cab that has two old white label G12T-75s in it since they seem to handle a lot of low end well, and they don't totally fart out like the greenbacks, but you can still hear that there is something funky going on especially from about the 13 second mark in this clip. This is still with the EQ all at noon but now boosted by the MXR Custom Badass OD in normal (SD-1) mode. The 100hz knob is at noon so a good bit of low end is being shelved off, yet there's still this big flub. You can also still hear how the chords decay strangely although the V30's made it even more apparent.

Sounds ok to me

I can hear it from 13 seconds on in the second clip. If it was mine, the filter caps would get changed and new tubes. Try tapping on the tubes with a pencil/ chopstick etc. if you get rattles, that could be the issue or part of it. But if the amp is not on top of the cab, probably not the issue.

I mismatch amp/ cab impedance all the time. 8 ohm into 16 ohm cab is my preference. Doesnt affect anything in any of mine.
