2A guys, thoughts on various high precision long range calibers?

I've been using 7.62 NATO in a semi with 24" barrel for long range precision shooting for awhile. Using my 50 BMG isn't always practical.

I've been waiting years to find a Sig Cross in 277 Fury to no avail.

Thinking about a Savage 110 Elite Precision in 300 PRC, with a 30" barrel. It's available in other calibers including 6.5 creedmoor and 338 Lapua, but I wanted something modern, with better accuracy at greater distances, yet close to the 308 in size and kick.

What are your thoughts on high precision long range calibers?

Not looking to break the bank, as I still plan to get the Sig Cross in 277 Fury if they become available in my lifetime.

Open to other options for long range high precision bolt action rifles too. What should I look at?

300 PRC is what I would choose if I was gonna start from scratch. Its absolutely a mile capable round, and is getting good support from the PRS community. Realistically I am too vested in 308's to jump ship now, I have too many of them in different bolt/AR platform configurations and have shot them enough to realize that they kind of force you to stay on your fundamentals, much more so than some better rounds to that fly better and buck the wind better. My shooting buddies are running 6mm BR's and 6mm Dashers, and they are fantastic distance guns that don't have the recoil of bigger stuff, but they are all finding out they will only get 2200-2800 rds out of a barrel before they have to re-barrel the weapon. Im getting 10,000 rds out of a 308, which has far less turbulence at the start of the barrel lands because of its relaxed shoulder as opposed to the steep shoulders of the 6.5, 6BR and 6 Dashers. Im willing to live with that due to the fact we rarely shoot past 1200 yards and my 308 will do that all day, even though Im using a lot of correction out at that range. The savage is a decent gun for the money, but I would seriously consider the Ruger RPR, while I was not fond of mine at first, it was a Gen1 that had some weak spots that they have addressed on the current versions. It is offered in 300PRC with I believe a 26" barrel. Primary reason for me was it uses AR tools to change barrels, so I can work on it and take care of anything that happens without sending it to a smith, so you can do anything you need to at home with tools you might already have.. I have no data on barrel life of 300PRC's, I only know a half dozen guys running them and they have all gotten them fairly recently, but most of them have already run them out to a mile, and that's pretty badass in my book. I just cannot get there with my 308 RPR. Once I made some changes, the gun is a solid shooter out to 1200, it will hit a 10" plate at that distance all day if I do my part and the wind is playing nice that day. Plus the fact that I reload and I probably have 20K pieces of brass for 308 that Ive kept to load all these years
I don't know much about the 277 Fury, I don't see them at the PRS matches, there may be some there that Im not aware of, but I know a shit ton of people in the PRS community from all over the country, seems like it would create some buzz if it was better than what the top guys are using. That always happens
Be wary of a round that comes out that is hard to find, if the support from the shooting community is not enough to sustain it, it will disappear and you'll be stuck paying 10 prices for it with no options

@JTyson Thanks. 277 Fury was designed as the new US Arny Next Generation Squad Weapon round a few years ago, and civilian options were announced shortly after, but I never see / find anything chambered in it or any ammo. Tired of waiting.

For long range, I have two 7.62 NATO / .308 rifles, 50 BMG, and was looking for something different and modern, hence the 277 Fury which is unobtanium so far. Given the other options, 300 PRC looks like it fits what I want best, vs 300 WinMag, Creedmoors, Lapua, etc.

I'll check out the Ruger Precision Rifle thanks; so far the Savage 110 Elite Precision with the 30" barrel is top of my list. I've seen a few alternatives with shorter barrel lengths.

Yeah 50's get expensive to shoot. I would look at the distances you want to be able to cover and realistically see what fits your criteria.
Guys that shoot out to 1500 yds regularly but know they will seldom shoot past that are running 6 BR's and 6 Dashers with great results, low recoil and stunning accuracy, but they are mostly running custom builds that get stupid expensive before you ever put the glass on them, plus your gonna re barrel them much sooner. I will say the best distance gun I've shot so far out to 1500 was a 6mm Dasher that was an Altus custom build with a Krieger 26" barrel, Defiance action, TriggerTech trigger assy and ZC optics. You could watch the bullet fly all the way to the point of impact with those optics, but there are several brands you can do that with. NightForce and Kahles come to mind.
Shooting at distances way out there is a lot of fun, but it can get really expensive if you don't think it through before you purchase what will be your baseline weapon system, you end up buying stuff twice..
Anyway, happy hunting!

You might check out Altusshooting.com, its the place we shoot distance in Fla. They sometimes have ready built custom competition guns that are surprisingly priced less than you would guess. I can tell you first hand the smith they have is world class but they will obviously be a bit more than a savage or a ruger RPR. You won't be replacing it when the distance bug really bites you though, and their customer service is top notch

I'm old school I guess. I really haven't dipped my toes into the new 6.5 this and 6.8 that pool. Old BAR in 30-06 with a Bushnell Elite 4.5-30x50 seems to get the job done as long as I do my part.

There’s no where to shoot long range around me. What I tell most folks that want to get into is say goodbye to cheap ammo.

Depends on how far you want to go. I like 300 PRC. I LOVE 300 Norma. It’s an easy button for long range. I have a barrel for my Barrett MRAD and life is easy.

This is spoken as someone with a 6 and 6.5 and a 338 LM. 338 LM is really only useful if you really want to blow the engine block out of a car at 700 yard. 6 is better if you want to just tag paper. 300 norma should give you more range than 6 but the recoil and flat sailing is easy.

Or if the longest range your gun club has is 300 yards.

Hehehehe
I hear ya, me too
I'm the "special needs" kid in the class with my 308's
But they work for me, hold up a long time, and ammo components are easy to find.. Well, except for LR primers.
A 30-06 is still a great round in my book (y)

Sheeit.. If I had the money, I'd buy a Ruger Precision Rifle (the poor mans Barrett..) in 6.5 Creedmore..

Isn’t everyone a 2A guy?
Isn’t the 2nd Amendment law?
So you think everybody is an everything that is law guy? Plenty of people want to eliminate the 2A. Plenty of people disagree with many different laws. Plenty of people completely disregard the constitution or constitutionality of laws if it suits them.

So since you are a 2A guy, let's hear your opinions on the topic at hand. Long range calibers.
