He hunts in Ohio. Straight wall cartridges only. Guess it’s all flat.
You ever heard of the Billy Dixon shoot? 1538 yards with a straight wall sharps 45-70. I forget where the original incident took place but the comanches were surrounding a fort preparing to attack and Billy Dixon takes his rifle and knocks a comanche off his horse at 1538 yards. The comanches decided they weren't interested in fighting that day after that. Every year they have a Billy Dixon shoot where that's the target distance. Rainbow trajectory. I love them old sharps rifles. It's a great cartridge and a very hard hitter at that.

It’s a man killer…or anything else. It was a military cartridge and was used prolifically in competition shooting back in the day. I think it was what they were using when they were shooting on their backs with the rifle propped up on their feet. Also black powder can be super accurate because it behaves the same pretty much constantly. I had a couple 98’s in 30.40 krag…and a couple 03’s, but never one of the 45.70’s. There’s a few people who use them for deer and bears around here. The lever guns.
