Hi I'm used to using 4x12 cabs but now I find myself in different circumstances transport wise I'm having to use a 2x12 .
I have been using the Evh 2x12 with a Evh 50 head and it sounds pretty good but lately I have started taking my Friedman be 100 out to gigs and used the Evh cab with it .
I'm wondering what your views on the Evh cab is compared to some other high end stuff , I was looking at
Friedman , (does the rear ported feature make a difference ? )
Cornford
Orange
Bogner

Or is the Evh worth keeping ?
I live in England so we don't get as much choice as the USA .
Any opinions on this please , thank you .

Go with an oversized 2x12, like a Bogner. It will come closer to a 4x12 sound. IMO the 2x12's with less space (air) in them sound boxy.

Some People say the insulation on the back panel of the Bogner can make it less resonant , I haven't tried one so not sure how true that is

I agree, very boxy

Orange makes the best 2x12 in my opinion. Sounds as big as the 4x12 and just about as heavy to move.
Open or closed back?

I have a Bogner 212CB. It is the shorter stacked cab version. Dimensionally, it is identical to the bottom half of a 4x12. I loaded mine with a couple of Creamback 65s and it is monstrous!

I have a rear ported (Mesa) cab. The best part of it is that the sound reflects off the wall behind it, so it's a bit easier to hear than one aimed directly at your feet.... but, since it's still mostly closed you still get the majority of the closed back cab sound, which is better for crunching/chugging rhythm IMO.

I'd agree, until they are ported.
John Suhr used a frequency modeller to make the CAE cabs the same sound as their bigger brothers.
The result was a smaller cab with very little weight.
Here's one FS in the UK:

Ported cabs are too directional for me to use live on a stage.

I use a Splawn Creamback 65 loaded with my BE in smaller places. It's oversized, well priced, has color/grill options, and sounds great.

I have a Splawn V30 loaded one for my 101B

So how does a port make it more directional?

Ports project the low end in a specific direction. I've experienced this and there are many discussions in other boards about it.

Anybody able to give a comparison between Friedman / Evh / Cornford / orange , any one of those , I have a chance of a Cornford one locally but wondered if the Friedman was worth the extra cash .

What speakers are in your EVH 2x12? I have one with the EVHG12 speakers, I don't find the cab boxy at all

Aren't the Cornford cabinet made of pine?

Since you're in England why don't have a look at Zilla cabs?
I have a 2x12 Fatboy (V30's) and it sounds very good.

Yeah, they do fill the entire room quite nicely

To each their own I guess. I have only experienced ported 4x12 so maybe 2x12 are different, but directional is the last word I would use to describe the ported cabs.

Below a certain frequency the human ear/brain mechanism is unable to determine directionality, I think because of the wavelengths being too large for phase and/or timing discrepancies between the ears.

Most tuned ports emphasize/have a resonant frequency below this.

I would guess that some less-well-constructed ports could be beamy, but I haven't experienced this from my dual-ported Bogner cabs.

I bought one of those stupidly cheap Harley Benton 2x12 with vintage 30s installed for cheaper than just buying the speakers on their own! Sounds the business.

Now that I've tried one, I wouldn't go with anything else. I really like the port city stuff.

If not though-I'd go Stoneage or find a Mesa used on Craigslist.
