I had to sell all of my gear a while back and I am just looking for the cheapest way possible to jam with a drummer from time to time.

I am saving back up for a good amp but in the meantime what is the cheapest method? I wouldn't care how bad or good it sounded. The only concern is being able to keep up with a metal drummer.

The cheapest option I could think of was buying a beloved Crate G212 combo amp for $80.

I would say practically any 2x12 is probably enough to be just fine with a drummer.

first amp from my parents was a G212. Still have it after all these years. Use it now as a 212 cab for my 50w valvestorm head...swapped out the stock speakers for a pair 25w RI Greens.

But best i recall, that amp was (like) 60w at 4ohm?? Either way, you thinking of running a pedal through it to beef it up or something? Ofcourse it was years ago, but the amp was plenty loud,,,just real thin in the mix... IMO of course ;)

ETA: just re-read your post,,, only you and a drummer, I'd say it'll be fine on it's on

I might pick up a Maxon 808 eventually but like you said just to check out some other musicians for now and temporarily.

Thanks for the replies, I will probably pick it up.

Look for a Randall RG80 combo. I believe they are 1x12's but they have a ton of power and cut for their size and power rating, and they are very affordable.

Maybe try and find a used Peavey 5150 combo (212) and a Maxon od808. If it's just you and a metal drummer it'll be plenty loud and should be pretty cheap, plus it'll sound great.
Good luck.

The Randall RG series amps sound pretty good and get very loud. Preamp tube and solid state power. Should be able to pick one up for a couple hunny.

No offense, but why would any 5150 need a od pedal? Like bringing your own shot glass to a bar. They got more than you need.

Loudest and I mean loudest drummer I ever met complains my 5150 III 2x12 combo is too loud. And another blames me for his hearing loss. I was using my Peavey 5150 and matching 4x12 for years with him. I say it's the cymbals. He says I play loud, too loud. I say no such thing!

I play 1x12, 28 and 18 watt combo, and it's barley on, and we still get volume complaints, I don't know where you guys play, but volume being to loud is always an issue.

Un miked basement with some metal players.

Not talking gigs just jam sessions.

I remember when I was between amps with a previous band I was in and I used the drummers Peavey Bandit 2x12 plugged into a 4x12 cab and couldn't hear shit. That was with a full band though.

That Bandit did sound pretty badass though when I was just playing in the room by myself.

No offense taken. You use the od808 (or other dirt pedal) as a boost to bump up the mids a bit and tighten the low end. It'll turn a good sounding metal amp into a great sounding metal amp.

There are tones, feel & pick attack that you absolutely cannot achieve without driving the input signal into a valve amp. I own a VH4 and I run overdrives in front of my drive channels pretty much full time. And I don't play metal. It's not a case of whether you need it. It's whether you like what they bring to the table.

I like to put a maxon 808 in front of everything. It's pretty much mandatory.

So I've been shopping around and have one other question for you all....

What about a 1x12?

I found a good deal on an 80w 112 and kind of want to get it.

In full agreement with regard to the boost out font

Make and model?? Tube or solid state amp?

80 watt solid state is probably not going to be loud enough.

Was looking at the Peavey Bandit silver stripe. Transtube.

My friend had an old bandit and was a different model but sounded pretty decent for what it was.

Just worried about volume.

Transtube is what? Tube preamp and solid state power? Probably not going to be loud enough.
